I bought a 19 foot Micro-Cruiser in super shape for only $7K. And then theOB died, and then rigging turned out to need replacing, and various equipment was needed, and suddenly we needed a dinghy with another OB, and then we discovered what we didn't have when we got becalmed and had to be picked up by the USCG. In the end we spent an additional $7K making sure we had everything we really needed.
yikes!

I'm still not sure about the headache of purchasing a boat across the border, then import charges, tax, etc, bringing it back and registering it here. i guess I need to do more research.

Plenty of good choices in your size range. FWIW I had a Mirage 29 with roller furling (jib) and as a complete novice, I was able to sail her solo (or with terrified and catatonic crew) across Lake Ontario without incident many times. Wheel steering is nice compared to the tiller, and the Mirage can point high and move quickly. It had the typical interior with galley (stove), enclosed head, V-berth, under-sole aft cabin for 2. Good sailboat.

Hi Lee,

I would also look at C&C 30's. Tons of them in Ontario. I had a 1976 C&C 30 - solid fiberglass hull, super fast, really stands up in a blow (very high bal disp ratio) and built like a brick ****house. For your budget you could find one with a diesel.

Good luck

sounds like my crew (family) when we were caught in a Lake Erie squall last summer. [emoji12]

Re: Time for an upgrade

I would like to second Ann's recommendation for a Yankee 30. A Catalina 30 will have more room, but the Yankee is bullet proof. I know of one that survived a hurricane in the Pacific and once read about another that survived a 360 degree roll off San Francisco and didn't loose the rig. Yankee built boats to a high standard. This I know from personal experience being a long time owner of a Yankee Dolphin. I am also partial to S&S designs. They are sweet sailors and in my opinion nice to look at.

Re: Time for an upgrade

am I correct in assuming that Catalina's are generally regarded as better boats than C&Cs? I know that both brands are quite plentiful.

Re: Time for an upgrade

No, Catalina is regarded as a better boat to be in (large interior for the length)and for coastal sailing. But c&c's are crossing oceans. I loved my Catalina 22 I mean loved it.

Tanzer would be as good as anything else out there in that price range. Sail fairly well also.
