Time sharing

Hi all

a german gentlemen is selling this 69" aluminium Pilot cutter on ebay :

69.7´ Pilothouse Cutter (Aluminium & US custom built) | eBay

he lowered the selling price down to us$ 120k. I spoke to him on skype, and he seems to be honest, so no hoax.

I have the dream as many to sail, BUT , i have never sailed before.

Gavin McClurg gives some good straightforward advice :

So you want to buy a sailboat? | Offshore Odysseys World Expeditions

So its not smart, for a newbie like me to buy such a big boat. BUT.

Maybe there are some experienced sailors here, that would be interested to buy such a boat together with me and do time sharing ?

Re: Time sharing

To state the obvious ... why would you want a 70 foot, 50 ton monster like this? You could not sail this without several knowledgeable friends. Second, there's something very wrong with this if he's asking $120,000 for something that the parts listed are worth more than that. For the annual docking, insurance, and maintenance on this thing, you could buy a smaller nice used boat, annually.

Re: Time sharing

hi John

the seller said that they were calculating us$ 30k per year for maintenance. Do you think that is a realistic figure, or is it probably much more ?

Re: Time sharing

I'd not even try to guess the maintenance costs for a vessel five times the gross tonnage as mine. I think before talking, however, you should start adding up the categories of costs - maintenance, insurance, dockage (if desired), harbor or mooring fees, provisioning, etc. Also, this vessel is over 20 meters, meaning that the rules are most stringent, and costs higher -- not something I have experience with.

Re: Time sharing

Hi,
If you've never sailed before, perhaps it might be best to go out on someone else's sailboat- a friend's, a captained charter, and see if you really like sailing. If you do, why buy a time share in a huge boat that you could never hope to pilot alone, when you could buy your own, smaller boat to fall in love with? You can take lessons to learn to sail, and continue your education in doing.
