Documented tonnage is based on a rectangle of the habitable, volume inside or cargo space if I remember right, is has nothing to do with actual boat weight.... right? or did they change that....

The posted information regarding calculations for USCG gross tonnage are correct. However,net tonnage is 80% of gross tonnage is correct only for inboard non-sailing vessels and 90% for sailing vessels with inboard engines. For outboard vessels [whether sailing or cruising type], gross tonnage equals net tonnage [ie. there is no reduction for inboard machinery taking up cargo space]. This is per the USCG Simplified Measurement Tonnage Guide 1, page 9 [TG1-CH2]
