Transmission help

Hi All,

I find myself once again asking for help.

My transmission is not working properly in reverse. It is selecting reverse and turning the shaft but the shaft won't increase in rpm with the engine and won't push the boat. Forward works fine.

I have dived the boat and cleaned the prop, checked the linkages and oil. But all are fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also if there is anyone out there that could help identify the box so I can get my hands on a manual it would be great. It is connected to a yanmar 3T80 which is a tractor engine. Which hasn't helped. I have attached a photo.

Thanks

Mike

Re: Transmission help

The shift fork inside the box may be worn or the gear may have worn teeth.
It might be slipping out of reverse under engine load.
Remove the top plate and have a look inside for wear or broken shift fork

Re: Transmission help

Thanks guys,

I managed to identify it. It's a Volvo penta ms. And the problem is a worn cone. I'm in the process of tracking one down and am going to give it a go of replacing it myself.

Re: Transmission help

To be sure the cone is faulty, remove the shifter control rod, select reverse manually, and add power. Any change?

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Volvo.

This guy may still these http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...9LPdAcxYJ5w4ng
Volvo made these from about 1976 to 1981, and 15 years later stopped supporting them. You can get the ball bearings and seals from any bearing house, but for the rest, find a dealer with NOS, bend over and smile.
Speaking from experience.
