Traveling around the world with family

Hello there, I`m new and this is my first post-

We (My wife and I) are working hard to take a change of life style. We have 3 little girls (2 -5- 7) and we want to take them to travel around the world, home schooling, and living abroad, all of that.

We are looking for vessels with this characteristics:
- Length: over 45, less than 55
- Year: over 2000
- Price: 100.000 usd

We have found in Croatia (web search) some vessels in this range. Jenneau, Dufour, Beneteau, etc

What boat do you recommend? for this challenge, why?

Regards,

Re: Traveling around the world with family

You do not state if you have experience but...if you have absolutely no sailing experience go to your local marina and start sailing with other people as crew and start looking at boats.

There are sites to crew for people too.

What you think you want right now will end up changing a whoooooole bunch.

When you have some experience and know what the bits and bobs do, charter a boat or consider a purchase then.

Save a large chunk of your total budget for maintenance and upgrades, no boat is 100% ready to go...something always breaks or is broken or you will want to change or add something.

Going from zero to ocean is pretty much a recipe for a broken dream.

Re: Traveling around the world with family

Hi, thank for the reply.

Yes, we have some experience, I have more than my wife - we bought a 33 ft and we have been sailing time to time with the girls. We also charter a 52 beneteau for one week, also with the girls - This experience made we think a voyage for a couple of years may work for us.

We have a total budget that consider the vessel, upgrades, living costs, repairing and maintaining cost - we have an excel sheet with the forecast of these costs.

The idea is to star in the mediterranean been there 4–5 months and then if we feel ok, try crossing the Atlantic

Re: Traveling around the world with family

Remember with a 2-5-7 year old on board you’ll be essentially single handing nearly all the time. It will be difficult/impossible to do long passages with this crew.

Chartering is nothing like owning a boat ,

Start smaller , stay more local and build up the “ crew “ tailor your ambitions to what’s practical and safe.

Re: Traveling around the world with family

We had friends go RTW with their family on a 60' schooner. Their kids were High School & College age, though, and could stand watches. The boat was big enough for them to invite friends along on some passages. A two-year voyage, IIRC. They're still married and children have found employment.
