Universal Diesel 24 - Weeping Hole Leak

I have a 1981 Oday 34 with a Universal Diesel 24.

I started it up for the season this year and noticed a drip about every 3 seconds from the weep hole behind the impeller.

Can i just replace the seals?
Do I need a new pump?

How involved is this and where can I get the parts?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, the seals need to be replaced OR you need a new pump.

Check for someone in your area who rebuilds the pumps or buy a new or reman one.

Also, check you oil dip stick and verify that no water has gotten into the oil (milky colored oil).

No water in the oil as far as I can tell.

How worried about fixing this should I be?

Will it last for awhile or should I expect it to go out all at once?

They will usually weep to give you a warning before they spontaneously self destruct…..you have been warned….failure is looming. Rebuild or replace immediately or face the consequences.

Re: Universal Diesel 24 - Weeping Hole Leak

As has been stated above, the pump is warning you of an imminent and potentially catastrophic failure of the internal pump seal. Replacing it is an easy repair. Fixing it yourself is a good introduction to working on your own boat, a necessary skill for the true cruiser. Replace the seals (and the impeller) and see if that stops the "weeping" (it probably will) Only if it does not solve the problem, install your spare water pump.

Re: Universal Diesel 24 - Weeping Hole Leak

Catalina Direct sells both the oberdoefer pumps and the repair kits:

https://www.catalinadirect.com/shop-...ot-oberdorfer/

If the bushing is cracked the pump will need to be repaired by a pro, if you can find someone to do it.

My pump is also leaking. I bought a new pump and once swapped out, will try to rebuild the old unit for use as a backup spare.

"How involved is this and where can I get the parts?"
If you have to ask, get some one else to do it...

As others have said -replace/ rebuild now. If you don’t feel comfortable rebuilding yourself. Call DEPCO pump in FL. They have the parts, replacements & experience. Usually they will look at the pump for free estimate. Shipping charges are the worst part. Turn around usually less than 2 weeks.
