Veers to port.....

....immediately when I let go of tiller when motoring.

Any idea why? Prop wash maybe?

Re: Veers to port.....

It would help if we knew something about your boat.

Presumbly "tiller" means it's a smaller sailboat.
What make/model/size?

Inboard/outboard?
Offset shaft (or O/B)?

Re: Veers to port.....

Motoring alone? Or are the sails up? If so, which sail?

Re: Veers to port.....

It's from the directional spin of the motor , which I assume is inboard. I had the same question when I first got my boat. It shouldn't do it under sail alone.

Especially with a balanced spade rudder and a prop just forward of it. Happens to my boat if you let go of wheel while motoring

So yes. As Gamayun says: propwash.

Re: Veers to port.....

Easy to check: shift engine to neutral, wait 3 seconds then let go of tiller. If still turning left there is a problem.

Re: Veers to port.....

Yeah sorry....

Fin keel transom hung balanced rudder inboard. C&C 27Mk V.

Sounds logical hoping prop wash is culprit

Re: Veers to port.....

Some C&Cs had an off-center propshaft.
