Re: Vendee 2020

besides the foil....no foil issue, one must also take into account each skipper's ability to divine the weather and select the most appropriate route..not only the weather for today, but also the next and next...

Boris was explaining in his video's how his autopilot was programmed to vary direction, surfing down waves....ie, he was maintaining a zig-zag motion...

I'm sure we've all seen video's by now, of a skipper's ability to fix, mend or repair various and sundry stuff...no small feat....

Then there is sleep management....in my view....this is a big thing....maybe the biggest...

I have a thing for Jean Le Cam.....at age 60-something, he is the old dog here....but he is a canny sailor.....his ability to stay up with the leaders is indicative of his sailing skills...

But, all in all, an amazing race.....amazing boats, people, the youtube video's, etc....this is really the first time a viewer is able to " experience" this race from the comfort of his/her arm chair..awesome fun.....I'm fixated by the whole thing.....too cool !!

Can it be termed as 'lift' ?

I use lift, lifted when my boat gets e.g. lifted by the current towards the upper mark, etc.

Guillaume Verdier: “On the Vendée Globe, we cannot say that foils are not useful”

https://www.tipandshaft.com/en/ameri...re-not-useful/

Quote:
...According to our forecaster at Team New Zealand, there is a seasonal weather lag of almost three weeks, summer in the big south is just settling in so they have got there a bit too early.
Quote:
In terms of performance we expected more from the new foilers and right now it seems differences are not so important in comparisons to the previous generations of foilers nor indeed the daggerboard boats. How do you explain that?

Well before the arrival of the foils, the progression deltas every four years was on the order of 0.05 knots now they are of the order of 2-2.5 knots, so the difference is significant. But foils cannot be used all the time, we can see that there are very difficult conditions in which they do not serve a purpose. And there was a rather special weather pattern the boats were all slowed badly in the Saint Helena high and then this particular weather in the South. So we can’t say that the foils are useless: the new boats are still mostly out in front, they have a turbo which allows them to gain big speeds upwind and reaching. And it will still progress a lot more, this is still a design turning point that will go on for ten years.

Apivia the leader just got foil damaged.
Samantha Davies just left Cape Town to pick up where she left.
I’m getting those headlines from from french websites I don’t think it’s appropriate to post the links here.

Why wouldn't you post the links?

Broadens the horizon to read different sources :-)

There are plenty people from all over the world here who can read French just as well as English.

Thanks for sharing your info.

forum rules do require that posts be in English, but I don't believe that linking to a non-English site is a violation of those rules. Other moderators may have a different view on this!

Re: Vendee 2020

I'm wondering what's going on with Charal, odd heading 32 degree and very slow speed 2.6kn.

No official info as far as I know yet.

Might be that the tracker cought him exactly in a tack though...

Re: Vendee 2020

Have you seen this incredible video? About 11000 miles and then 5 boats within 10 miles. That's funny! -- Ha, and Pip Hare in her rather old boat had the highest speed of all over the last 24 hours (https://www.vendeeglobe.org/en/statistics). Well done!
