They use goggles on the older boats that don’t have a fully protected steering station, and on all boats for deck work at speed.

A helmet with breather mask (and pony tank) would be useful for capsize and abandon ship situations. I think Escoffier (sp? sorry) had a breathing mask and goggles.

Re: Vendee 2020

the interesting thing about Boris's video is that in that clip, there are 5 Vendee boats....clearly the foils are not providing much of anything in those wind conditions....drag maybe ??. Jean Le Cam is also in the mix....a non-foiler...

Re: Vendee 2020

that's not as much as would have thought....seems like Jean was at it for far longer than that...plus slowing down to drop him off...I woulda thunk something north of 24 hours at least.....wish I knew how they came up with this number....
same for the others....???

Re: Vendee 2020

at Jean's current vmg...the time allowance would still keep him in 4th place...hmmmm......still about 60 miles behind Apivia...

let's see what the Pacific has to dish out..

Yes, water ingress in the bow compartment. He has heaved to abs is now pumping out and then will start searching for the cause.

Re: Vendee 2020

Meanwhile Sébastien Destreameau has issues with his steering, a pretty crucial bolt in the rudder system failed.
Failed welding.

He said he's adrift and desperate to get it fixed before the next low arrives.
Hope he manages.

Re: Vendee 2020

you can fix a lot of stuff at sea....but a failed welding will take some ingenuity.....yep, some serious weather heading his way...but I think these boats do have "emergency" steering...he may have to hand steer his way out of this dilemma....there is only one boat behind him in case things turn south....and off course, Sam Davies, still a way's off...

Re: Vendee 2020

Your right and he is smart enough to create a fix if he has the right tools and parts aboard....
Regarding the weather, to bad that his canopy did not last. That's now a fairly exposed cockpit.

Cross my fingers for him and of course for you as well.
Really sad that NZ could not let boats into one of their bays. Especially if they where sailing for more than 14 days...

Re: Vendee 2020

on LinkedOut, a crazy story!
the front panel latches popped out, the front cargo hold filled with seawater ...
after pumping and checking, no problem.

I think they're more usually called "watertight compartments" on IMOCAs. Anyway he's back up,to speed now.
