Re: Vendee 2020

"cargo hold" sounds more shippy....who knows....could be a trove of stuff in there...

I've never quite come to terms with some nautical jargon...

I have a "lazarette" on the stern...which is....er...an aft "cargo hold"...

the first time I stepped on a sailboat I was requested to pull in a "sheet" but I saw no bed linen anywhere near grasp...

wanting to use the bathroom I was directed to the " head"...I had to walk along the "sole" to get to it....etc, ad infinitum...

Re: Vendee 2020

This weekend Louis Burton on Bureau Vallée 2 is planning to pull over in the lee of Macquarie Island to fix some things at his masthead; problems with the mainsail track and halyard locks. Seems he got bashed around a bit when he tried to go up there out in the open sea. He has to lower his main to do the work, which makes the boat bounce around quite a bit.

I was thinking of getting hooks for my reef clews, but hearing of all the halyard hook issues I’m reconsidering.

LB’s upper mainsail track pulled away and can only sail with 2 reefs. Both his halyard hooks are broken. I’m wondering if this is an issue particular to square tops?

Gybing back and forth in very light air. The two boats south of him may get stopped and LinkedOut further north may have better breeze. But that tight low below NZ will be interesting.

Re: Vendee 2020

This race is getting ridiculous, I mean they’re looking for wind in the roaring forties !!! What’s up with that ? Does it have to do with climate change ?
Someone enlighten me.

Re: Vendee 2020

My guess is that it's a very strong La Nina year.

The whole stretch from Cape of Good Hope to Cape Horn should be between 40 and 60 knots.

It doesn’t quite work that way as they now have an ice exclusion limit that keeps the racers considerably further north than in previous editions. As it is the southern summer and a La Niña year, the high pressure systems that sit below the trade wind belt project down into the 50s (usually only into the 40s). Previously, sailors could head further south to get below the highs, as Sodebo 3 was doing, but not anymore.

There’s a huge ridge building from Tasmania and below NZ that will really affect the racers. Definitely a weird year.

Re: Vendee 2020

the "future" windy prediction site would seem to indicate all the lead boats may sail into a "hole" soon, that is moving east with the boats...not sure what to make of it at this point....

I read it’s not so much about the ice as it’s about keeping all the boats nearer to land in case the Australian’s or New Zealand’s rescue services are requested. It makes it safer for the racers and rescuers if needed.

Re: Vendee 2020

But the challenge of the Vendee is big wind and waves. Missing so far except for that tropical storm in the first week.

It does. I rather like the idea. Perhaps they could load them up at their starting point to deliver them to... oh wait a bit...

Re: Vendee 2020

I wonder if you could drag a fishing lure behind those Vendee boats...they are under autopilot...no engine noise....it gives you something to do...provides protein...etc.....in fact, I'd drag two lures...I wonder what you'd be able to catch there in the southern ocean.....the mind boggles...

in my neck of the woods, fishing for wahoo is usually high speed trolling....I see some possibilities here......grilled tuna for dinner instead of freeze dried....you bet !!!

^^^

OOhhhh nooooo! think of the drag, man, the awful drag..

And there are not so many species that will strike a lure going 25 knots!
