Re: Vendee 2020

I think for the Volvo event to get anywhere, it will have to become user/spectator friendly like the Vendee.....video, daily briefings, interviews, personal glimpses, etc, the Vendee set the bar..

Re: Vendee 2020

Think of it:

1) Vendee,
2) Mini,
3) Figaro,
4) Marsaudon,
5) Outremer,
6) Catana,
7) Lagoon,
8) Benneteau,
9) Jeanneau,
10) Champagne,

...

Rings the bell? Get out of this English-language-centered mindset.

Volvo will NEVER be as popular as Vendee. Unless maybe the French take it over and do it their way.

Because the French understand that for a racing event to be vastly popular, it must be vastly popular with SAILORS, not with the media or crowds.

Media and crowds popularity is the external result, not the driving factor.

The French simply understand it is all about the sailing passion. They are a passionate nation by all standards and this extends to sailing, food and love making.

I have been learning French for a time. For exactly the reasons mentioned above.

Amen !! I understand that learning French is easier than learning Spanish. I have spent some time in France, but my French vocabulary was limited to " pass the cheese please"

I do acknowledge, that the French are remarkably adroit at ocean sailing. I'm wondering if we'll see them in the AC event some day, or maybe that is just not their cup of tea....or glass of wine....as the case may be..

They’ve participated in at least two ACs. In Fremantle their boat was called ‘French Kiss’ and the tender was ‘Kiss Me Quick’! They also sailed in Bermuda, but not to great effect, in a very rushed and low-budget boat skippered by Franck Camas.

Re: Vendee 2020

I should have re-phrased my comment to say as " serious" French AC competitors..

Let’s hope they do. With the accident to Patriot, the Prada cup was a bit of a damp squib. More teams (at least six) would make it a much better competition. Having said that, this is probably GB’s best chance!

Re: Vendee 2020

True, I think the high cost and time involved of fielding an AC boat is a turn off to most, as are these complicated boats.....I mean ....seriously.....$100 mil to win a cup....and some bragging rights.....

GB brings a breath of fresh air to this event though...for sure....against all odds, GB beat the Kiwi's in the World Rugby Cup.....can they repeat ???

Yes, it’s costly and the eccentric criteria of the ‘Deed of Gift’ don’t help. But I’m looking forward to the racing to come, anyway.

“remarkable”????

Three words (in the context of Vendee Globe: Dame Ellen MacArthur. She finished second in 2000/2001, in her first (and only) attempt on the race. She then went on to set a record for solo non-stop round the world. She raced without respect for gender.

Two more words: Isabelle Autissier. She was the first woman to finish a single handed race (the BOC in 90/91). Now that was remarkable, if you like milestones by identity.

If you still believe that women make a second class of competitor, then I guess finishing first woman in a open gender race is remarkable. Otherwise, it is a super finish by a great competitor. She did break the female VG record (set 2000/2001 by DEM), but pointed out that there is no female class in the race. She finished 12th and calls herself a sailor.

Relax. You didn’t comment on any of the earlier finishes after JLC, so that’s why I called out calling a female sailor’s finish “remarkable”. It’s obvious you weren’t being derogatory, perhaps only chauvinistic.

No offence was implied nor meant, so please refrain from the expletive.

Couldn’t agree more. Perhaps minus the implied profanity.....

Unnecessary and churlish response.
