Re: Vote on the 'Best Blue Water Cruising Sailboat of All Time'

too many variances to make a call to what is the best! so many different people with too many different tastes.. one person will like one thing while another will find it trivial.. to each his (or her) own..

I say the best blue water cruiser is the one that's paid for and still floating!

But, I am very biased.
I think to be the "best" of anything you got to have more than just a few out there in population. To Bob's choices of the V-40/42 and the Tayana 37, I would add the Westsail 32. It's hard to go many days on the water without seeing at least one of these.

Some boats (Oyster and Deerfoot ...come on) mentioned are so far out of most cruisers budget that you rarely see one outside a sailing magazine or at a boat show.

For "blue water cruising" in moderate latitudes... My admittedly biased vote would be for Searunner trimarans. They are hard to beat for the number of safe comfortable passages made, (incl. numerous circumnavigations), ease of handling, and being forgiving to the ups & downs of life on the ocean.

They are great to windward & fast as well...

From a woman's perspective: our Kelly Peterson44 is our 3rd boat....Beautiful teak interior, easy to handle, heavy and stable, great interior layout -- with large master aft cabin, abundant storage, extremely smooth and reliable.....Well designed systems.......comfortable for long passages!

Re: Vote on the 'Best Blue Water Cruising Sailboat of All Time'

So far our favorite boat so far has been our old Rhodes Chesapeake built in Denmark in 63. We loved our Mason 44 she was beautiful and sailed well. All of Bob's blue water boats are better than nice. The Oyster 50 is the perfect blue water boat for the elderly, made to sail easily and beautiful. We hope our new one coming in June 2013 will be a good one.
Bienvenue chez Boreal

We are lucky to live in an age of great boats gone by and the beginning of a new time in boat design. It will be interesting to see what the future holds as many of the great bluewater production boats start getting really old. Hard to believe that boats of the late 80's are about to go into "the need to do a total redo."

Then the Kelly peterson 44 cane along and the discussion was ended. Indisputably the best boat for every need. It put the b back in blue, boat and uhh batter. Best in class beautify built, bonafide, bombastic, breathtaking, beast, barring none,, I kinda like my boat except sometimes she puts the b in beech.

We love our 1985 Passport 37, maybe not the perfect bluewater boat, but paid for and ready for our next adventure.

Smile Re: Vote on the 'Best Blue Water Cruising Sailboat of All Time'

There are so many great bluewater boats that it is hard to choose. I actually sail a lowly Catalina 27 and keep it in San Diego Bay, with an occasional foray out by Dana Point. It is old and I realize its limitations. My favorite boats for long distance sailing are CT. I absolutely love the CT 56 design and think it is a beautiful boat with great sailing characteristics. My next boat will probably be a Catalina 34 or 36, since I am primarily a coastal sailor at this time and look for the value and comfort. My dock neighbor has a gorgeous CT 41, and I would consider one of these, but I know what the maintenance of the brightwork would entail.

Re: Vote on the 'Best Blue Water Cruising Sailboat of All Time'

Different boats for different folks (and folk's budgets!) but biased as I am, the Kendall/Westsail is definitely in there. Forty years old and still going strong. Those who call them Wet Snails have probably only seen them in low-wind areas like California. Ours happily goes along at 5-7 knots in more than 10 knots of wind. She won't be heading back for shelter in 40 knots either. Not bad for 32 feet. Although I do crave an indoor shower and freezer...

A little off topic but interesting, Many boat have crossed the atlantic including a FOLDNG KAYAK in 1928. Link is interesting to read. A jetski crossed in 1999 from italy to miami beach.
