Thats my point; draft is not a diference between a good costal and blue water vessel but can be important to either depending upon the users use. My question was: What is the difference between a coastal boat and a blue water one. Their must be some must have attributes for each right?

IMO
Most any blue water boat can be coastal.

Most coastal cannot be blue water.

For the most part, money separates the two.

Re: Vote On the 'Best Blue Water Cruising Sailboat of All Time'

There are many differences between coastal and blue water sailing, and therefore between boats. Others have mentioned draf and below deck layoutt, also sail plan and sail handling, cockpit size, tankage, ventilation, communications, storage, self steering redundancy, and much else. Of course, many have taken boats better suited for one purpose and used them for the other, but the tradeoffs may not be ideal.

They are made for short handed sailing and are quite nice below.

I am not a fan of Swans as a cruising boat. They are quite brutal below, difficult to sail and really ought be left to racing people. They should put out a cruising range and have someone sensible run it.

Hi SH, I like your thinking. I considered a Deerfoot before capitulating to lack of moolah!

perfect boats and perfect money,. not even a brand new boat is perfect. boat aint perfect until you make up your mind waht you like out here--and what you donot want.
all boats have what you do not want.
it is our job to figger out how to make it perfect for each one of us.
perfection is subjective.
perfection is also different for everyone.
perfection changes as experience is gained, i have also noticed.

Interesting. Same here. I liked Dashew's design philosophy but layout and $ took me to the Amel also. We spent a week anchored beside a Sundeer 56 in Fiji this year. Really nice boat.

Coincidentaly there were two of Dashew's PFB 64's there also. Not sailboats, but really cool cruisers also. We also saw a sistership in Panama back in January enroute to the UK from NZ. SetSail » Blog Archive » FPB 64 – Introduction

I must chime in!

My vote is the Formosa Peterson 46. Beautifully built boat and an amazing sailor in all conditions. One will find a Peterson 44 or 46 in ports throughout the world.

As a retired delivery captain, I strongly vote for the Cabo Roco 42 with the Hinkley Bermuda 40 as a close second.
