Wauquiez Gladiateur 33

I'm looking a Wauquiez Gladiateur 33 with a 2008 Volvo Saildrive. I haven't been up to see it yet though.

Any opinions?

It needs a few things, but I'm hearing and reading these boats are pretty well made and perform well in most conditions.

Re: Wauquiez Gladiateur 33

I have owned one of these for 5 years. Excellent sailing boat. Getting long in the tooth unless a lot of maintenance has been done. Teak in cockpit is probably getting thin (it is in mine), Electrical appears dated, I also had a problem with the keel starting to loosen but was able to fix without a major problem. PM me your phone number and we can talk.

Re: Wauquiez Gladiateur 33

I have owned a Wauquiez Pretorian 35 for 17 years and love the boat. The Gladiateur is the little sister. Both boats are "go anywhere" boats with the exception of the very high latitudes, where there is ice, as they have fiberglass hulls. I have put 13,000 miles on mine. You'll particularly love her in a seaway when the wind comes up. It is a real blue water vessel. Your imagination will be your only constraint.

Best of luck!

I have owned an '84 Gladiateur for about a year now and love it. I did a lot of research before I bought the boat and it has surpassed all my expectations! It's fast and built very solid! I have not had any problems with the keel.

Sounds great! Does yours have the saildrive?

The boat I'm looking at is a 1983 Gladiateur with a 2008 Volvo Saildrive.

Re: Wauquiez Gladiateur 33

I believe all the gladiateurs came with a saildrive, if yours is a 2008 it sounds like it has been replaced (obviously) was it re powered at the same time? I did have an issue with my original 30 year old saildrive and had it replaced along with the original engine. An expensive if not expected cost for a engine and saildrive of that age. Feel free to PM me with any questions or if you want to call me with more questions.

Some had the shaft drive. For a few bucks more you can get a pretorien. Same draft, much bigger interior, slightly more modern hull shape.

Thanks. Yes, this boat has been repowered with engine and saildrive but the boat isn't perfect. If I get it, I may have to redo the dodger/bimini, remove the radar tower, replace the sails etc.

This boat is maybe half the price of a Pretorien. Those boats are awesome though.

I'm a singlehander with a Bristol 27. I'm thinking the Gladiateur 33 would be a perfect fit as my next boat. I'm thinking it will be like going from a Hobie 16 Catamaran to a Nacra 6.0 (or F-17) Catamaran with boards in the beach cat world which is where I came from.

Plus it has a tiller!! (which is all I've ever had on all my (6) sailboats)

Wauquiez Gladiateur

There is a link to a website with a lot of info on the Gladiateur but it is all in french. It includes the original Spec sheets and photos of the boat being built.

That is cheap! I paid $50,000 for my pretorien. I have a buddy buying a Hood 38 next week for 56K.

Asking $27K and with a newish engine? Better get her before someone else does. Put a wind vane on her and cross oceans!

Does your boat have the single set of spreaders? (like in the video)

The boat I'm looking at has double spreaders. Tall rig?

You know what I'm sayin'

Yeah, that's sort of what I was thinking. Somewhat worried about the Saildrive but I'm mechanical and usually near my boats every day.

So it's not something that will be neglected

Re: Wauquiez Gladiateur 33

I don't think the factory supplied any with a double spreader rig. The pretorien has double spreaders.
