Weight of a Volvo Penta MD2B engine

Anybody know the weight of the MD2B.

I'm likely going to remove it from my boat to rebuild it. It will likely be out for months since I'm taking it home and working on it part time. I do have an outboard on the transom that will get me in minutes from my mooring into the bay or back for sailing.

Removing the engine will likely change the center of gravity and I probably need to add some weight where the engine was. If you have experience removing an inboard like this temporarily or permanently I would appreciate your wisdom.

A quick internet search will tell you that engine is around 500 lb in weight.

I had that engine in a previous boat. It's a heavy SOB. The flywheel alone is around 200 lb. I took mine off to lessen the weight of the engine for installation and removal. I would advise you to do the same.

Mine was raw water cooled....ie, salt water. It's a brute of an engine for sure.
It's not made anymore, but I think parts are still available.

Be forewarned that Volvo charges an arm and a leg for parts.

The product bulletin says 505 lbs. with MS gear box.

1/4 ton removed could certainly effect vessel trim, but it’s easy to add or remove ballast and see what happens..
