Westerbeke BTD 8.0 no water from exhaust

Hey all
On our new boat and fired up the Wedterbeke. No issues with that, and making power just fine.
We’re watching the engine temp as there was no water coming out of the exhaust. Ran it for 10 minutes and it sat at 170 degrees- did not get hot. Then we shot it off.
For any of you knowledgeable about this specific generator, is water from the exhaust necessary (as I thought it was), or does it come out another through hull?
Seacock open and clean with quick moving bubbles seen through clear cap, gurgling from exhaust as well.
Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks very much!

Might have a thermostat in it that just didn't get hot enough to engage water-cooling.

Any chance your boat has an water/exhaust separator? If so then yes the cooling water would exit below the waterline.

If you follow the exhaust line off the engine and you have a seperator your should see a split where the exhaust goes to an above waterline thru-hull and the water to a below waterline thru-hull.

It’s possible that the thermostat did not ‘trip’. But wouldn’t that be for the onboard coolant? Not the seawater?

Thanks very much

And, would you ten feel comfortable running it for an hour?

A good thought, as far as I can tell, the exhaust goes through the coolant manifold (up top) and through the 45 degree exhaust elbow into the 2” hose into the virus and out the exhaust at the rear. I don’t believe the raw water separates...

Also, the exhaust elbow has a temp sensor shutoff (assuming it’s working) and it did not shut the fuel off from overheating the exhaust.

Oddly, the guy that I bought the boat from made so sure to check the water coming out of the Volvo exhaust, but did not for the Westerbeke.
