Rub rail and toe rail are two different things. Rub rail is for side of boat so if you bang into something you have a little protection. One on each side of the boat. Toe rail goes around the entire boat on deck where staunchions are at intervals. Please correct me (anybody) if I'm wrong.

Re: WHAT IS IT CALLED?!

I think the OP is speaking about the rail incorporated into many GRP boats. Unique to each model because of the hull curvature. Having an L cross section not bendable to fit a boat that it was not designed for.

Re: WHAT IS IT CALLED?!

To use stainless steel rub rails, they should be mounted on a strip of wood that is first mounted (thru-bolted) to the top of the topsides, then the steel band is mounted to the wood.

Placement is critical to give the topsides the most protection when docking or entering locks.

Defender's prices are way better than West Marine, but there may be even better deals if you look around.

Re: WHAT IS IT CALLED?!

Aluminum toe rail is very bendable to fit the boat.
One warning about perforated aluminum toerails. Many of the boats built with that leak and it's nearly impossible to fix. You're drilling maybe a 100 holes in your deck joint each with a likelihood of leaking at some point.

Re: WHAT IS IT CALLED?!

Not sure if I am missing something here.
The two links posted show rubrail material sold by Defender and West Marine.

Marine Industries Rub Rail
https://www.westmarine.com/buy/taco-...hoCLggQAvD_BwE

It appears that they are both available in 3/4" H x 3/16" W x 12 feet long. (solid)

Defender $89.99
West Marine - $379.99

It seems the OP is talking about toe rail not rub rail.
