I'm thinking it's like a "red light district". Find out if there are women on board.

Re: What is up with red boats?

I’m a huge fan of red boats! Although in saying that, I did just buy a red catamaran and painted it light blue, so..... haha each to their own, I guess!

Think sunshine, as in thermal loading. The darker the color, the more solar energy is absorbed. White reflects solar energy, dark absorbs it. How much heat can you tolerate?

Re: What is up with red boats?

It seems mostly a matter of personal taste, though I agree with those who comment on how hot hulls get when painted strong, bright colors such as red, vibrant bright blues and even greens. I would go for red sails - if I wanted a color other than white, which I don't.

If we ever get to the point of buying a boat for cruising, I wonder if it will be a dealbreaker. Hubby feels the same.
Anybody else?

My engine is red and it sure seems to increase the price of parts. I hear green is even worse!

What's up with people who insist on painting boats colours that blend in with the sea?
If you don't want to be hit by a cargo ship red is actually a good idea.

Wooden boats needed to be a light colour to avoid sun heating. Epoxy boats also.

Glass boats any colour you want. But best to be highly visible.

Red visibly by that cargo ship during the day I'll buy. At night there is a chance in hell of red being seen because of it's place on our visual spectrum.

Nah not quite - just repainted a bright red wood / epoxy catamaran light blue as parts of the hull were fading, and the hull temp barely dropped in daytime temps.

I understood small GRP aircraft couldn’t be dark colours due to the sunlight issue?

Lordy no! Nothing is more boring than a sea of white GRP boats in a marina haha

Nothing beats a lick of paint in an interesting colour.
