Maybe you could pin down your actual goals and needs and budget. It's kind of odd to see a Ron Holland design in there with a Falmouth Cutter.
Goal - retire in 1 year and sail to from New England to Bermuda, then Caribbean and on Westward through Panama Canal.

Needs - Durable boat with a reputation for safety and quality. Will be a maximum of two people when my wife meets up with me.

Budget - $50-75k and I have $30k set aside for upfits such as rigging, electronics, watermaker, etc.

Oh, goal posts just moved. You can forget the cramped heads just before the v berth, you will need a decent sized heads with shower particularly as she will compare it to your previous Beneteau 40.

I mentioned that, and she said she did not care.

You dont understand then . Go bigger and a shower is a must.
My recomendation now goes to a spencer 35 or my personal favorite my old s42. And yes you can easily singlehand them .

Happy wife happy life

Yann Quenet is doing this right now in a 4.5 meter boat of his own design (boat name Baluchon).

I would trust this boat to be good for the job at hand.

However, we own a 26' boat (rtw 2003-07 and 3x Atlantic loop) and we find it only marginally safe in bad weather. It makes a decent home for very intimate (and not overly tall) two. Do not try this at home ;-)

I believe a boat to be somewhat safe and acceptably comfortable on a bigger voyage it needs to be in the 32-36' range. A Rustler 36 is one good example of a small, but very seaworthy, boat.

But you asked about SMALLEST.

Hence Yann's 15' boat fits your original query, I think.

Other tip: Webb Chiles, boat Gannet. (I think 23 or 24'.)

Re: What’s the smallest boat....

A plastic IF is inexpensive and very viable boat. I think again they are about 25'. Easy to buy, outfit, then easy to re-sell.

Our friend Marcus sailed his from Germany to the West Indies and back.

And to think 30 years ago a 35 ft cruising sailboat was considered extravagant.

Yes. 35 feet was the British, pre-Brexit standard. Yann's boat is the new EU post-Brexit standard.

There is a new EU Directive for this pending. Stay tuned.

PS pls note he not only SAILS the boat (right now approaching New Caledonia) but he also DESIGNED and BUILT her (and some others, before).

Re: What’s the smallest boat....

Crossing an ocean? Tinkerbelle at 13.5' but to live aboard? 27' to 35'. I lived aboard solo for 5 years on a Pearson 323 which was fine. Plenty of tankage and sailed very well for a cruiser. And I blame Manry's book Tinkerbelle about his Atlantic crossing for getting me into sailing in the first place.

Re: What’s the smallest boat....

Knowing nothing about the condition of this particular vessel (teak decks!), the boat that stands out to me is Wauquiez 38 (aka Hood 38). Decent comfort and very strong. Great designer and first rate builder. Good performance and can carry a lot of the crap you will want to take with you. This is a Mark 1 version with less than ideal companionway arrangement. The Mark II version has a companionway to aft cabin where the vertical hatch is. Some people have retrofitted a companionway here. I would look for a Mark II or I.5 and one without teak decks.

Re: What’s the smallest boat....

Of the above I'd look at the Wauquiez 38 and the Tartan 37. Not a big fan of "Island Piglets" but that's just me and I am sure there are plenty here that love their IPs.

Given the parameters that one stuck out for me too, except a dodger is kind of important IMO.
Looks like the Tartan 37 will be the winner maybe?

I agree about the teak and companionway. Great looking otherwise.

It’s definitely a front runner.

Re: What’s the smallest boat....

You can put a spray hood on the companionway and a dodger on the cockpit easily for the Hood/Wauquiez 38. I agree on the teak decks but they are reallly well built good sailing boats. As are the T37-2 on the list.

The IP27 and especially the IP31 are slow boats and they don't point well. If you're a numbers kinda guy look at the specs on sailboatdata.com and compare PHRF numbers for the boats you are looking at. Also look at bluewaterboats.org for ideas.

I like the bigger IPs but the smaller ones lack hand holds below and having a liner make for less access and less storage than other boats. If you want a full keel boat consider Cape Dory , Allied and Bristol.

Bigger may be better with two people on board.
