You right, its probably worse.

Want to put someone off the sea and boats, take them out on a stinky fishing boat, throw in some serious diesel fumes, let them puke their lungs out. Job done!

Any hobby. Any new adventure. And I always hear tons of advice against it… but whenever I opted to listen and buy a “beginner’s” version I regretted it. Either lost passion because the thing was just not capable of what I was looking for or wasted money because, as you said, I ended soon buying what I knew I wanted in the first place.

This is why I started this thread… to idwntify the type of boat that will be “capable” of sailing in blue waters and crossing the oceans when we eventually get to that level of expertise / comfort but will mailny serve us as a fantastic and comfy yacht to enjoy cruising in the fullest comfort. I know I said it before but check out sailing Zatara on YouTube. They started with a monohull and made the switch. Episode 50, the entire family describes the change and you are looking for a family boat.

Gee, I started with going out on my friends 52' cat and now I'm buying my own. Guess I missed all the "fun" you are talking about. But then, our goal was never to make it as miserable as possible. Silly of us huh?

I would go the other way, but the boat you really want and ad crew to help and teach until you are comfortable. LOTS of very talented people looking for a crew spot for little if any pay.
how can someone with little experience buy a complex boat and " know what they want ". Inevitably and I see it all the time , they get obsessed with certain features that in the end have no relevance to what they end up doing

Never heard a family say, "gee, wish we had fewer heads and less space".

I was looking at the Garcia yachts 52 ft mono as the result of reading another thread and stumbled across the Garcia Explocat 52. WOW

Pity about the €1.3m starting price.

As an owner /fixer I’ve certainly said it.

Well... if we are still recommending monos, I'd say have a look at the bluewaterboats.org site too for some ideas of older, proven designs. I know it's nice to be on a 55-60 foot boat but if it seems to be too much, there are many 40 to 50' that have served other families well I'd say. Hudson Force 50 comes to mind.

To the OP- have you made any progress on which models or designs you may consider?

My wife and I have certainly said that. Buy the smallest and least fitted out boat you can enjoy owning.

I think that is wise advice. My dream is to cruise with a new Leopard 45 or 50. I will let wisdom override my dream. I will stick with my 40 ( hopefully Moorings would have given me back 48% of the cost of the yacht in 5 years time) and rather make do with a smaller yacht and more cash in the bank. Unless I win the lottery, then all bets are off!
