Re: What to do about Insurance

My broker with Atlass Insurance is Russell Jamieson *(321) 459-9905‬ represents several lines. I have a policy with Progressive which was not the cheapest but reliable. I have a 2003 Beneteau 361 agreed value $75K comp and $500K liability with premiums that are $2600+/yr.

I recommend you contact a few brokers including Russell to explore options. I assume that you will require a recent survey, which will require a haul-out and therefore liability unless the boat yard is lax. Perhaps you should secure liability only policy first, then consider if a survey is needed or if a comp policy is even feasible.

My friend has a Tayana 37 that is in above average condition and over $100K invested, and while policies were available, they were so expensive that he went liability only.

As for hauling out for the hurricane season, I don't know of anywhere near Port Canaveral that has space available. If your hurricane plan is to haul-out, you should find out what insurance is required by the yard.

You are certainly welcome to do that, however, please note there are not many underwriters that will cover an old boat in Florida. We will likely all go to the same underwriter, so we ask that you please not contact a bunch of us with the same request, as that only annoys the underwriter and slows down the quoting process for other boats. Quotes that used to take 1 or 2 days are now taking up to 3 days due to the large number of requests. Perhaps if you are considering contacting multiple agnets, coudl you please ask them who they will be quoting with before you send off your information, and only send your information to agents that have a market that has not already been tried. Thanks!

Re: What to do about Insurance

Messing About had the perfect answer.
We have the same problem.
We purchased a 62' Marlineer power boat. We are liveaboards which is even more difficult.
And it is a wood boat.
The insurance companies were absolutely insane. Our survey was pristine, surveyor said unbelievable A wood boat in the US is treated like the plague. ultimately we got liability, that cleared us for marinas.
We moved the boat from Socal to Mazatlan Mexico. And gave a wonderful wood boat a new life. No insurance hassles any more. The insurance companies are trying to sink us all.

No full time cruisers or liveaboards.

Seems that insurance companies want your boat tied up at your dock behind your house and never move it.

When I used USAA, their boat coverage comes from Progressive.
