Re: What's the most seaworthy boat you can haul with a 1-ton truck?

Welcome aboard CampbellSoup!

Not sure about Goman, or where you are but there was a trailer like that for sale a few years back near San Diego for $5500, with triple axle and electric brakes. They turn up on craigslist.

This fellow did something similar: using a serious but common pickup truck, he pulled his Olson 40 from San Diego to New Mexico, did a serious refit, then back to San Diego, and onward to the Galapagos.

Here is my Olson 40 on trailer. Very easy.

Obviously a boatyard with a crane is needed.

A friend of mine sailed to Bermuda and back on a 23-foot Wharram cat, and crossed the Atlantic and back on a 28-footer. The beams can be removed and the hulls put next to each other. Relatively lightweight and low on the trailer compared to monos, but more complicated to put together and launch.

A Tiki 21 (Wharram) has circumnavigated and was a regular competitor in the Jesters Challenge.
The hulls are light enough to be carried by two men and fixing the beams is just lashing them to the hull.. the mast is just 3 stays plus the dolphin striker.
I could remove mine from the trailer and launched in 1.5hrs.

I'll just tell you which boats I would consider for that kind of sailing, in no particular order.
  • Nor'sea 27
  • Seaward 32 RK
  • Noelex 30
  • Dana 24
  • TES 28 Magnam
These are all quite different boats but each is a good choice depending on what you're looking for.

I don't think there's a U.S. dealer for TES yet but the Canadian dealer might be able to import one for you. The Noelex would also be hard to find as think there are only a couple in the U.S. But there are plenty in Australia if you don't mind going that far afield.

The others should be relatively easy to find in the U.S.

Re: What's the most seaworthy boat you can haul with a 1-ton truck?

The Noelex is a great boat. One of them (the one I used to race on) has done two Sydney to Hobart races. I'd take one most places; it wouldn't be an ideal Cape Horner, for example, but it's roomy for its size and very fast for such a roomy boat. With a hydraulic lift keel and a tabernacle mast it's fairly easy to trail.
