I will second the recommendation for Bacon Sails

I have bought both new and used sails from them and they are a great company. The new sails are manufactured overseas in the same lofts that manufacture Quantum sails and some of the North sails and I felt that I got great value for the money I spent. They also have a huge collection of used sails that you can search from their website (baconsails.com).

If you want to try a place closer to home, check out The Sail Warehouse in Monterey: The Sailwarehouse

They have a few used sails in the inventory, but mostly they sell new sails made in the same lofts that supply Bacon Sails.

Re: Where is the best place to buy new sails?

Havent used them yet, but Mack Sails out of florida, still makes all sails there, no out-sourcing...I was just referred to them by local, long-time (30 yrs) rigger, for a new storm jib. I am waiting for a quote.

I concur, I have bought perhaps a half dozen sails from Ernie Minney over the years and he is honest and has a great selection. It's a fun place to shop as well.

Re: Where is the best place to buy new sails?

I have a furling headsail from Far East Sails.
All good except for the sun strip which was stitched with very light thread and had to be completely restitched after just one season as it was coming off.
Disappointing.

Re: Where is the best place to buy new sails?

I purchased new sails for my Columbia 45 2 years ago from Peak Sails. It did take a little while to get the sails but I have extremely pleased with them. They were made for my boat and fit as expected. The quality of materials and workmanship are great. The cost was about half the quote I got from North.

Go to the Hunter Forums and find good second hand loft or recommendation of small loft who has supplied the same sail, easy for them to make the same.

Try Sail Care, Ford City, PA.
They repair old sails and make new ones. Check out their website.

All the Best....

Re: Where is the best place to buy new sails?

North Sail is the quality standard & you pay for it. Almost everyone has em made in Sri Lanka to spec. No shame in that. All will be within a few hundred $. I wouldn’t buy used, as they’re stretched out and have seen some UV damage- even if they look ok. Worth spending the $ for new. That said, Bacon Sails in Annapolis is a great resource for new & used.

Re: Where is the best place to buy new sails?

Just a quick thought. Have you considered adding roller fueling to the boat? It’s a lot easier to roll up the sail when you are coming into the dock. Just a thought since you are replacing the Genoa anyways.

The boat is a 1984 Hunter 25.5 and currently has a 110% genoa jib with hanks. The sail is in poor shape (multiple areas that have torn, covered in sail tape). I've been scouring the internet trying to find a replacement. The best site I found was shop.hunterowners.com, same exact sail new for $1100. Is that a normal/decent price? Should I be looking at gently used as well? If the web isn't the answer, does anyone have recommendations in Southern California?

Your help is appreciated!
Sailmakers make sails, thats where you will get a new sail made for your boat.
Get a few quotes on price and compare.
Check on the net for sail lofts in your area.
