Where to refit

Hi Cruisers,

Hoping to hear from people who have fist hand experience of places.

Two parts to the question:
1. Where is a cheap, safe place to refit a mono hull?
2. Where do people haul out and store their boats for say 6-8 months? Where are the best cost countries?

Re: Where to refit

Probably the UK as second hand marine stuff is easily available and cheap.
foreign boats can import new stuff tax free.
Buy VAT free uk marine products,of which there is a huge selection.
very high level of engineering, electronics and marine services.
pound to euro rate is low currently.
virtually no covid compared to the rest of the world!

cheap storage if you avoid the more in demand yachting centers.
big tides if you need to do a quick bottom inspection without using a boat yard.

Re: Where to refit

Yes, what Atoll said.

I went out to Brittany to view a boat owned by a Brit who lived there. this was a few years ago.

he said he would sail over to the UK to get work done, things fixed, and this, for the good service, quality work and the fact that it came out less expensive than if he had the same work done locally, in France.

He said he would cross the channel often to load up on spares and such as well. He said that it was worth the trouble, right down to buying varnish.

His comments stuck because, at the time, the pound went pretty far in France...
