Which BRANDS Should Be Polled ?

A recent post asked for the 10 worst boats, and was rightfully shut down as it was not productive.

That being said, it was thought provoking.

Soooooooooooo.... that being said, I want to put together a poll based on the following general classifications.

However, I need some help in populating the survey.

Can I get your input at to which BRAND of boats should be included in each category. I specify BRAND, because a followup survey once this exercise is completed will talk about MODELS with in the highest ranking brands.

As example, it is generally accepted that Hunter as a brand is considered as a coastal brand, whereas a Hallberg Rassy generally is considered to be a blue water brand.

There may well be some crossover in classifications, as a BRAND, such as Hallberg Rassy may well be considered in both the blue water and high latitude class.

Final two questions, should there be any additional categories (freshwater, trailer, etc.)?

Can this be a useful, albeit indicative only, exercise?

All polls like this do is re-enforce stereotypes. Little good comes from it. Most production boats with slightly different tweaks can fit into most categories

+1

I voted no, there are just SO many variables to consider as no two boats even of the same brand and year will ever be the same due to extras or lack of.

Re: Which BRANDS Should Be Polled ?

OK, OK, I'm starting to get the message.

It was a bad idea!

Now, mods, I made this a 10 day poll. Feel free to change that. After 104 views and only 10% even responded, with 90% against (I was the sole for vote), I think this experiment is toast.

Man I come up with some questionable ideas sometimes!

Don't worry about it. If only boats were easy to classify then we'd all be alot less confussed!

Actually it was pretty productive, just difficult to conceptualize and monitor without emotions getting all bent out of whack, so closing it was probably for the best.

Why was it productive?

- If you are a contrary investor or a collector, there might be some great bargains in these wonders.
- it highlighted that even the best designers in the industry had some bombs mostly out of construction techniques but also some design issues (Alberg!)
- If you are buying one of these, you'll know what to look out for and if it was corrected (poly resin over ply for example).
- You learn some history about boats.

Where it really became difficult though is to narrow a firm worse boats. We're not talking about arguments based on personal opinions, but really boats that didn't make it in the industry historically - maybe even recalled. Has any sailboat been recalled from a manufacturer? What sailboats really historically failed to penetrate the market because they were unprovable designs? Hard to find such pure delineation I think, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist from time to time.

By being against the argument, then you are saying ALL boats are WORTHY and NO BOATS in history were ever recalled or failed. And thats just lying and ignorant IMHO.

Agree, Brands are too big. And models are about 99% just general emotion or opinion.

Heres something of a source of interest:

Search Recalls
Circulars
Recalls.gov

Im guessing you will see MUCH more in the power boat world!
