This sounds interesting. I'll look into them. Thanks.

Checkout Corsair 880 trimaran. Sleeps 5, 20+ knots.

I think it’s because monohulls are the tried and true while multihulls are a niche.

Monohull = PC,

Multihull = Mac

That’s essentially it.

They were even more like this comparison a few years back.

So a guy steps off a multi hull and onto a dock with a pig and a prostitute
His friend steps off a sloop with a rabi and a priest
Who crossed the road to the pub first?

Re: Why do you guys like monohulls so much?

There is exactly one multihull in the province where I live that I am aware of. Some of this may be attributed to the fact that there are very few yards equipped to haul them. It costs an incredible amount to change the width of a boat yard given the lift and basin have to be widened. So there may be a reluctance to buy what can't be serviced locally. The winds are also very strong and flukey and that isn't the tradewind or down wind sailing multis excel in.

I can certainly see the strong points of a cat but I'm also not blind to the limitations of owning one. There is also the point of the absolute torture of quick gimballing type motion that they possess that often doesn't get portrayed well on YouTube.

And yet, there are many stories of monos and cats cruising together and the Cat people arrived with a warm meal because things weren't flying about the cabin and the mono people were eating crackers and struggled to make something as simple as hot tea.

Also stories of catamarans abandoned in the "rage seas" that show up just fine months later floating upright. You don't get the same stories from monos because even battened down, they often go to the bottom.

Pretty accurate!!!

I’m a Mac guy for technical reasons (OSX is a Unix flavor).

I’m a (performance) catamaran guy for the same reasons (unsinkable, faster, etc).

Look up the history of the America's cup.

After Denis Conner whooped the Kiwi's but in a much smaller cat, the rules got changed. I think there was another cat back in the late 1800's that caused a similar rule change.

It upsets the traditionalists.

Re: Why do you guys like monohulls so much?

Lots of reasons as previously noted. Now my 2 cents.

A friend of mine has sailboat brokerage locations in 3 states around the GOM. Selling new/used, big/small and mono/multi for decades.

A while back at a boat show He gave me the honest answer:

Male buyer? Mono 85%

Man & wife buyer? Multi 70% mono 30

Draw your conclusions. 🙂

Someone said Etap, Pogo, Sadler will not sink, but I think a Pogo will. Last time I sailed one, it was a regular one skin hull.

The settees and some area forward and aft are filled with flotation foam on the Pogo 12.50 - I assume the others are too. Limits storage, but makes it buoyant in case of holing.

Re: Why do you guys like monohulls so much?

as a prospective buyer I would say the things that concerned me were already mentioned by another poster. Number one was load carrying capacity, two was that I don't enjoy sailing them. Hull slap is really annoying and I don't know how anyone would get rest on a passage doing that. Third when I look at a old hylas, Oyster, HR , Amel etc the quality is still evident over time. it's still a beautiful boat I have yet to see a 20-30 old cat that looked usable or decent. Maybe some of the new ones coming out will still look good over time.

I think you should just get what you like, and there is nothing wrong with what you like by the way. to each their own. I have two friends that like sailing mono's and have for years but when they retire it's going to be a cat because they want their wives to go with them.

Not sure where you're taking this SMJ, but I'm not playing.

You said cruising catamarans and cruising monohulls make the same speed overall. I agree there are different classifications of “cruising”, so I used the top 3 most popular cruising catamarans as an example and wanted their monohull performance equals.

Re: Why do you guys like monohulls so much?

Depends on what you feel comfortable cruising on. Bought my 27 to just get out there before retirement and it came with a trailer so I can take it to different lakes if I want. It's definitely a good setup for camping and sailing for several weeks, there is a couple in Great Britain living on one and sailing the British Isles. I don't know if this would be the boat I would pick for that but once again what you can cruise on depends on what you are comfortable with.
