What’s up with that? I thought the Amel was gods gift to blue water cruisers%?
"when their 52-foot boat lost power"

Wonder if they realised they had sails?

Nice boat - inexperienced crew

No, it’s the risk factor. So that means 50 times less catamarans flip as monohulls sink, if you use your numbers.

Why do you guys like monohulls so much?

Obviously this post was written by someone a little entitled....fiscal realities are real.
Catamarans are crazy expensive compared to monohulls. More expensive to make, buy, outfit, haul out, store, etc. It’s not even comparable. We all don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend and some of us never will.

Any catamaran in my price range was either mast less or major rigging problems, no engine, obviously sunk, or the likes. Many more quality used monohulls.
But the worst part was finding one with adequate headroom that wasn’t a 40’ cat which I couldn’t afford. Im 6’1” and personally like to stand up fully wherever I can. Outside of a small space in the pontoons (?) smaller catamarans are really lacking in headspace.

Catamarans also don’t sail as well in my opinion especially with any wind forward of the beam.
I also prefer how my monohull feels at anchor. I’ve known catamaran folks who’ve gotten seasick at anchor due to all the constant back and forth. Not to mention the constant and sometimes loud slapping.

Sailing isn’t just for the rich nor should it be. It’s like asking why doesn’t everyone drive some luxury SUV...

My thought is we are seeing more and more catamarans because the economic disparity has become so great in the past few years. Same reason we are seeing a boom in mega yachts.
The traditional catamaran cruising couple (from my experience with catamaran owners in S. Florida) is retired and has no real worry about money and hasn’t lived paycheck to paycheck for some time.
That’s not the average sailor. So yes Catamarans are becoming more prevalent but will never make up a majority of cruising boats due simply to costs.

On a downwind passage, the performance equal of those popular cats will be a Bene or Juneau 45. Proven over and over again on the ARC.

Re: Why do you guys like monohulls so much?

The answer is .....

Because they can't afford a nice catamaran!

After pages and pages of cat bashing.....can't sail upwind, ride sucks, bridge deck slap, cats flipping all the time etc etc. It only boils down to one issue.....MONEY! Of course nobody will admit it or the fact that many if not most ENVY cats and would secretly LOVE one. But no, sadly the economic reality is that cats are expensive and many sailors just can't afford one and never will.

Also....

How many cat owners ever go back to a mono? Few.

How many mono owners buy cats.....LOTS!...the vast majority.

People can bash cats and extoll the virtues of a mono all they want....I KNOW the real reason they do it and it's got nothing to do with sailing.

Thanks, and on an up wind passage I would place my bets on the Bene or Juneau being faster.

Re: Why do you guys like monohulls so much?

Maybe some, and I sure don't want to come off as "cat bashing" or talk about personal money but since you brought it up, that's not the case with me. It's just personal preference. A cat I looked at that I found I liked a lot about was the Antares 44i. Exterior isn't the greatest in the looks department but it has a lot of great ideas and a nice interior.
As nice as it is, is it as nice or well built as an HR, Oyster that I could get with the same money? It's not even in the same ball park. In my opinion for me, you are trading quality for a more house like experience. It's just a matter of what you value, someone could be of the opinion I am requiring something that is way overbuilt for my intended use...fair enough but it's my money.

I think what drives a lot of this is people make a decision and their ego won't let them believe that may not be the best decision for someone else. Kind of an absolute, this is better for all situations and I just don't believe that to be true.

We’ve owned quite a few cruising catamarans and never paid that much for any of them.
I don't know where you are shopping, but a 40' cat <7 years old is currently selling $200-240k.

Coring is bad below the waterline..

For the mono that's the entire hull.

I have it out in winds well in excess of 40 knots and huge seas, I dont know how huge as it was at night and I couldnt see them, ,
I never felt unsafe on it, Even tho I was worried that the mast might snap off it,

I am about to see another Gemini, 105MC for the first time as its coming from SA to my Marina in Victoria,
It lives in the Spencer Gulf of SA, Port Lincoln,
Which is the northern part of the Southern Ocean,
So I would assume that Gemini would have sailed in the Southern Ocean at some point,
Port Lincoln is on the edge of the Southern Ocean,

I bought a Cat because a mono wont do what I want a boat to do, or go where I want to go in it,
It has exactly the same upkeep as a Mono,
Same Sails, Same single Motor,
It sit flat and level all the time,
But I can park it on a beach with the Tide out,
I can clean the hulls and anti foul it on a beach,
With out the need to crane it out of the water,
It has three bedrooms in it with a Queen sized main bed,
I can stand up straight in it, PO was 6.4 and stood up straight in it,
My cock pit is fully enclosed,
I dont get wet or cold,
I have an Autopilot so I can enjoy the voyage,
I dont have to steer it,
I sit or lay on the hammock out the back above the transom,
Which is always Flat and Level no matter how high the waves are,
The ride is always comfortable,

I used a protractor for the Degrees, and found I sit at about 10 to 15 degrees off the wave line. Approx,
So I maintain between 5 and 10 knots no matter how strong the wind is,
Using about a foot of Genoa to maintain headway,
I never sail up wind as it is too rough on my boat,
Breaking things is expensive,
Im a Cruiser, So Im never in a hurry to get any where,
I just installed a 12 volt. 90 litre freezer,
Which will give me approximately 6 weeks at sea for frozen food,

I will have 3 sections of my voyage around OZ that will be approx 6 weeks at sea, Even tho I am coastal cruising,

You buy a boat for your specific needs, Which I did,

Cheers Brian,

Where did you get your freezer?

We’ve owned one 38’ cat that was less than 7 years old and paid substantially less than $200k. Most expensive cat we’ve owned was a 43’er and was 9 years old when we purchased her. Paid less than $175k for that cat. None of our cats have been a member of the top 3 sellers, and those are probably the ones your talking about?

It took out all my masthead gear and caused me injury. The crew were "prepping to cross the Atlantic". Nuff said.

My mast is stepped to a 12" steel I-Beam that attaches the two hulls together.

It is buttressed, and tabbed to the keels of each hull.

Can run on one engine. (has two).
