You've totally proven me wrong, in a good way, but still, Polynesians didn't sail boats out of Ikea!?

This post appears to be tongue-in cheek but actually there is a vessel just like the one posted that sails still between Pacific islands carrying passengers. I last saw it in Fiji in 2018.

Joseph Norwood wrote a book on sailing fast, (and especially how to design very fast sailboats) and the crab claw rig gets some attention. No dummies, those Polynesians.

I tend to lean toward the lunatic fringe regarding flying over soft or hard water, but I'm very often draw to full keel boats too. (In fact -- here is a stunning admission: I have generally referred to motor boats as stink boats. But even so, I occasionally lust after an old wooden Chris-craft, Elco, etc.)

Right you are!! I'll have my cardiologist send you the bill. It took him a while to get my heart rate back to normal. Our tastes must be pretty similar... I had a 63 columbia too. A contender. Quite pretty with bright finished hatches and comings.

I, once, managed to fit a crab claw rig with a long stabilizer on an aluminum canoe. It was fast as if I were not wasting any portion of the wind.

i put a smiley face at the end. i was just giving u a hard time - didn't really think u were offended.
i rented a windrider 17 back in time. it was fast, fun, and dry, a great lake boat - one of its own kind.
i'd be just fine with owning a corsair 37, but the luxuries on a lagoon 50 don't mean anything to me. sailing a luxuriously comfortable catamaran is like bringing everything that i wanna run away from with me to everywhere i go; it's like living in a dull red bricked suburban house, sad & depressing. despite my generalizing, there are pretty cool speedy catamarans too, i think, but the popularity of them comes from their comfort and luxurious bs - my ranting was about suburbanization and mainstreaminization of multihulls. suburbanites ruined the car market; all we have is auto tranny suvs these days. and, now, they've decided to ruin the sailboats. it wouldn't surprise me a bit if one day all we'll have be 'trendy' cats in the sailboat market around here.
anyhow... meaningless ranting... i just want a full keel sailboat at the end of the day. i want to start with an old 27ft full keel, gain enough experience, and then buy a new ip349 one day. it's 2 early to even discuss about the future new boat, but i think an old 27/28ft full keel is a great choice as a first sailboat - a day sailor, weekender to learn the ropes...

A million dollar Cat is unattainable, the dream stays alive with a $150k monohull

Who says you need a million dollar cat?
Plenty of decent cats around for $150k
A world cruising cat around 60ft can be had for $500k

And plenty of what many would consider world cruising monos for around $60k

It's not about the money, although that rules out any cats I'd be interesated in.

It's about the boat and the experience, it's about the sailing, the romance of it, and the sport of it.

You'all can have your condos and your white pressed yachting attire

I'll take my old liveabord race boat any day.

Each of us knows what we prefer, but the first 4 photos are what I love.

The last two I find sterile and boring.

Hinckley 40 (I included this because it is gorgeous and it typifies monohull sail boats)
Wings Interior
Racing
Sailing with friends
Lagoon Interior (and if you like this I know of about 7 million condos which look just like it)
Catamaran Sailing

Re: Why do you guys like monohulls so much?

If you do the comparison on a dollars basis:

What a cat gets you: no heeling & shoal draught

What a mono gets you: more room and faster speeds.

For the same dollars you will get a longer, roomier monohull. Most cats I have sailed and sailed with simply are not quick, with a few exceptions, especially when loaded up with all the gear.

Hate to tell you but not all cats are condos. Ours would blow you away sailing and have significantly more room, but we don’t have the beautiful varnished wood interior, there are trade offs.
We probably are the exception to the rule though
