There is a lot of comfortable waterline that can be bought very affordably in the used mono market right now.

That sounds amazing! Which heavy displacement mono hull is that? Hallberg rassy 64 can do 11 knots off the wind in a blow but 11 knots in 15 true is amazing.

Although at 60+foot all the cost and berthing advantages goes out the window.

But the boat is 1000m deep - along with all their belongings and almost at the cost of their lives. Cat wins!!!!
How does your post answer the OP question? Why cat owners have to be so defensive all the time? Still not sure you made a right decision?

I answered the OP in two posts, one way more detailed than the other. This last post was just a reaction to a post that included gratuitous content that didn’t add anything to the thread. As my reply did (not add, that is). Thread drift!

That was a joke.
By the way, nice video with exception of too much wind noise. Incidentally, the furry thing that is fitted over the shotgun type microphone that eliminates the wind noise is called “dead cat” by videographers.

I was thinking on the terms of long term structural integrity if you have to buy an old boat. Are cats as safe after 30 years of [ab]use

My mono is 57 years young and I really don't see any cats that old .
I still sail the north pacific . And you don't see many cats here .

Fxykty, My post with the inverted catamaran is not gratuitous content. It directly answers two questions: "Why do you guys like monhulls so much?" and "Why don't they let catamarans into ocean races?".

Not everyone has a fear of capsizing in a catamaran, some do. I personally have that fear in my heart. What if....

I'm sorry, I have it.

For some reason I don't have that fear in a monohull, or the fear of sinking. Illogical I guess. But it answers the question "why?" for some of us.

I also think it also answers the question of why some ocean races do not allow catamarans. The organizers have the same fear.

I said that I could be seduced by a large, fast, perfromance catamaran, athough I am not sure it could do what my boat does for my lifestyle, costs aside. But that fear would still be there.

Re: Why do you guys like monohulls so much?

That's true. Some older cats seem to have cracked bulkheads issues. Especially performance ones. It's just a lot harder to engineer a cat. Although the newer carbon reinforced, resin infused ones may fair better. I guess we will need to see.

You can get a 2003 65 ft maxi dophin for less than a outremer 45. Although twice the amount of sail area to handle. The winches look a bit intimidating.

I like wooden boats, planked, and those are few in a multihull configuration.

You’d need to ask the organisers of the races that don’t, why not. Generally it’s because a run of the mill not very expensive racing multihull with crap sails will beat the pants off of a very expensive top of the line racing monohull. It’s the same reason Hobie Cats and Wharrams were once considered symbols of counter culture (well, Wharrams still are I expect).

As an example, Sydney-Hobart race organiser the CYCA just sites their own CYCA General Conditions of Racing clause 8.1 “a boat shall be of monohull construction...”. I.E. just because.

Brest Ultime Challenge, Jules Verne Trophy, Transat Jacques Varbe, Caribbean 600, Fastnet, etc, etc, etc, all allow multihulls.

DonCL, I don’t think I could get my wife to sail with me on that. Unless maybe the crew was included!
