Re: Why the hate on Island Packets?

wonder how crazy internet forums would go if you painted a Hunter that IP yellow (or whatever it is called)

Here is a link to a survey of IP owners. Read their negatives....

Wingsail, I think I met you & your crew a few years ago during the Banderos Bay Bash ...you may have seen my boat if you looked over your transom with binoculars.

Cite specific instances. As to stainless steel chain plates I think you will find 99% of production boats have SS. Now if you want to retro or build new with titanium just open up your wallet.

There is a huge degradation in the corrosion performance of SS when it is encapsulated and oxygen starved.

It's not that they used SS. It's that the chainplates are enclosed in fiberglass. To replace cabinets must be removed and the fiberglass ground down. It's a @$10k job to have done.

Not seen the hate of Island Packets. As has been said boats are trade offs with none having everything.

IP owners are loyal to their brand. Every boat has trade offs. Just because other experienced sailors have negative comments about the obvious challenged close hauled sailing abilities doesn’t mean they are bad boats. They don’t point well, no matter which model. Very comfortable and stead off the wind.

Build quality is above average. Lots of space in the salon. Comfortable seating in the cockpit. For me to much teak maintainence above the deck, but some like varnishing as therapy.

I’ve been on many sized IP with only the Blue Jacket having the feel and speed I like.

The IP tried sailing for a while, but were going about half my speed so they turned their engine back on.

OTOH, I met an IP coming across the Indian Ocean whose owner loved her, in spite of the fact that she cut off his finger with the hatch of the anchor locker in Sri Lanka. I'd put it in the same category as an Amel.
There are no anchor locker hatches on an IP. Access through forward berth.

You are correct about the encapsulation. When I did mine I did not encapsulate. Did this in Antigua. New plates were beefed up 316 from Garhauer, not the original 304. Also cutout small inspection Notch inside. My understanding is the newer models are not encapsulated, mine was an '89. It was daunting, not 10k, but you would not even know it was done.

Got my 10k figure from this thread with an actual replacement. https://www.cruisersforum.com/forums...-188085-2.html

Re: Why the hate on Island Packets?

I had the chainplates on my IP35 replaced (after dismasting), and it cost me every bit of $10,000.

Live and learn, I guess. Right? My current boat, a Hans Christian 33, also has encapsulated chain plates. In the next few years I will be adding external chainplates on this boat.

We had evidence of chain plate corrosion on our boat (rust streaks coming down inside the boat) and even though our chain plates are not encapsulated, having only about 1 inch covered where they penetrate the deck, we felt concerned enough to remove them and check.

We found cracking on one. The story of the replacement is here (in photos) https://wingssail-images.blogspot.co...h?q=chainplate

I am personally enamored by composite chainplates though they have some disadvantages as has been discussed.
