Re: World's Largest Sailing Yacht A

Jimbunyard I agree that there are innate traits that we have been conditioned to be attracted to.... Symmetry, defined features that portray a non threatening appearance.
When coupled with displays of obvious strength and integrity... and even body odor they affected how women chose their mates and those features over generations propagated as self fulfilling prophecies of what was good and proper.

Competition to survive evolved into who had the largest harem and palace, who ruled the largest army or most land while religious tribalism justified aggression towards those who were different.

Thus morality evolved from practical to theoretical, with that singular teaser that;
A man's goal must exceed his reach...or what's a heaven for?

So I try not to judge a person's motives until I have had dinner with them.

PS: In St-Barth, we see every winter a yacht called also A... I think it was designed by Philippe Starck... It looks great with its reverse bow
I was anchored off a serene island by myself (plus girfriend). Woke up in the morning, stumbled out to have a pee only to find "A" anchored not that far from me, it was majorily impressive.

I envy you. I would swim over to get as close to it as I could to have a pee.

I'm reasonably certain the Russian billionaire isn't losing much sleep worrying about what you and the others here on CF think of his new boat.

Actually IMO if that billionaire didn't care about what others think he'd be driving a Buick.

I kind of like it in its unabashed utilitarianism.

I checked the name in the CG registry and it returned a HIN which in turn returns the name of the builder as "Schulz Boat company". A further cursory search ties that builder to Walter Schulz of Shannon boats. Just sayin...

That would be the Shannon 53HPS.

There is a 2011 model listed for $1.5 million.

2011 Shannon 53HPS CUSTOM Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

On looking at the photos, I was surprised by the dual wheels on that high flybridge. I thought a single wheel from that elevated position would be sufficient, assuming the point of the flybridge was better visibility forward.

Perhaps an owner of one of these will comment on that boat, or that aspect of its design.

As with any boat design: To each their own taste. What suits one will not appeal to another; like dogs, cars, houses, and spouses.

Steady,

Nobody on the planet is dumb enough to pay 1.5 million dollars for a used 2011 Shannon 53 dual helm floating Winnebago. IMHO

I did not realize that a used one would be listed for $1.5 million. So, I wonder what it was priced at when new. Anyone know?

American yacht designers.... yeah useless...

The first five images under a google image search for 'Herreshoff'

Yep, couldn't ask for a better example of racism (in the truest sense of the word)...attaching an imaginary characteristic of a group to an individual.

Re: World's Largest Sailing Yacht A

You guys have to go back 50-100 years to find your examples of "American yacht design," on this thread we're discussing modern yacht design.... as in designed during the past few years. There's nothing interesting coming out of America today, only retread designs from forty years ago like the Shannon 53 marketed towards a few old farts who haven't died yet.

So now I'm a "racist" towards American yachts.... what a joke, just like the Shannon which looks like the Griswold vacation car from the 1980's National Lampoon movies.

" A few old farts who haven't died yet ".

That takes care of around 90% of CF. Things could get really lonely around here without all those "old farts". Maybe there's a little room for compromise.
