150% vs 135% genoa on prout quasar 50 cat

I have used the search and I think I have an idea of what would be best, but I just want to make sure I am not missing anything.

I have a new to me cutter rigged Prout Quasar 50 that needs new sails. Right now the genoa is a 150%. I was thinking of going down to a 135% but I still want ok light wind performance. I was thinking I could pick up an asymmetrical spinnaker for really light wind.

I will be sailing around BC Canada for the next year & 8 months. I will be sailing down to the south pacific in less than 2 years, and plan on a lot of Bluewater passage making.

I would like a genoa that is good till around 20 knots of wind. Would there be any sense in replacing it with another 150% and using the staysail in winds over 20 knots? Or would a 135% be more than enough in lighter winds?

both the head sail and stay sail are on rollers so it will be easy to change one for the other

I plan on doing some light racing but will not risk any damage to the rig to win a race, more just out there for the fun of it

The rig measurements are I 54' J 18' 3" P 48'11" E 16'1"
If there is any more information you need just let me know. Its $9000 for a new main and head sail so i want to be sure i'm doing this right.

Any help on this would be really useful, trying to get an order in for black Friday sails (pun intended)

Re: 150% vs 135% genoa on prout quasar 50 cat

Just in case anyone was wondering I went with a 135%. A 150% would have overpowered the boat to easily. If I need to reef to anything under 100% ill just use my staysail. All new sails will have extra reinforcement on them for extended off shore sailing.

I’ll be looking for a spinnaker to add to the sail inventory for light wind, that will give me many sail options from light air to heavy.

Re: 150% vs 135% genoa on prout quasar 50 cat

good choice,i have just ordered new head sails for my prout elite and opted for the smaller sized genoa 33m/2 that sheets in nice and tight without the spreaders and shrouds interfering as it would do with the larger 38m/2 genoa.
as a light wind sail i have a code zero with a furler.

i plan to have a pole, so down wind, the genoa and the code zero can be flown goosewinged instead of a spinnaker.
this should make the rig a lot more manageable than a spinnaker with a snubber
