The lame comment could be about the recommendation for storm handling - laying ahull.

I can’t see the majority of new cats fitting into any of Shuttleworths categories. Maybe type 7 with a lot of type 4 mixed in!

Re: 15M Catamaran Capsize off Portugal

Update - sortof

From the May issue of Multicoque

What is confirmed
-Off Vigo
-very dark night
-winds 20knots 70apparent
-9.5knots under main 2reefs and staysail
-would've been 18knots if carried full sails
-felt not a shock, but huge brake followed by capsize
-Regis clearly saw leeward board badly damaged
-leeward hull in front of board badly damaged
-mast beam(?) damaged
-photos taken clearly show damage but in possession of investigators

bits might have been lost in translation

Hit something. Nothing to do with overpowering or structural inadequacy.

Can someone help me with this - how can winds be 20 knots, 70 apparent if the boat is making 9.5 knots?

True wind would be about 20knots at 95-100 degrees.

Ah, so they are saying the apparent wind was 20 knots at 70 degrees? I misunderstood and thought he was saying apparent wind was 70 knots, which seemed crazy.
Thanks
