Re: 2001 Leopard 45 and what $64k in refit gets you

Paint job seems like a good deal. 15k incl materials? Awlgrip?

Rigging seems steep. Chainplates should be 3k or so. Just buying rigging wire and swageless fitting, turnbuckles would have cost u 4k for 7/16". If round it up...10k would have been more than enough

Re: 2001 Leopard 45 and what $64k in refit gets you

I don't believe R&C built the Leopard 45' in 2011. We had a 47' in 2004 which was the 45' with two foot sugar scoops added to the swim steps. After that they changed design firms and started building the 46'

Man, you got some smoking good deals. Windlass and 120m of 10mm chain for $2k - wow. All the items seem like about half (or less) than what I've spent. Great job.

2001 Leopard 45 and what $64k in refit gets you

The OP has got to be humble bragging - without supplier details the costs just do not sound reasonable. The quoted prices of various items don’t even seem to cover the costs of shipping them from Europe or the US to the Caribbean, let alone paying for the items themselves.

Details please!

Re: 2001 Leopard 45 and what $64k in refit gets you

As a fellow owner of a Leopard 45 (1999), who has done many similar jobs and others, congratulations on getting all of that done, and on getting very good prices. Two questions and two comments: The 45 was designed with sails that were downsized a bit for the Moorings, and which therefore are often used in many re-fits. Were you able to get the larger ones, with a much more noticeable roach? With your wife's trade affiliations, were some of the low prices derived from that? For example, quite a few things came from Poland, and the Lofrans, for example, is Italian made. Was your wife able to leverage her work for Sunreef, or are you saying these are Polish prices available to all?

The two observations are that if the seacocks and thruhulls are those commonly fitted in the Caribbean, they likely have a specified life of five years, thanks to builders conforming to a ridiculous EU standard. Eventually, (and it's short term"eventually", been there and done that)they will break in your hand, and I am talking about the fittings, not the handles. Before you head off on this scale of voyage, you need to be sure of what you are looking at. The EU standard begets thru hulls and valves made of a plated brass, often with a silver colored cover, and unless swapped for something else, get changed at least every five years.

Finally, where, exactly, is the Spectra? As a fellow Spectra owner, with the pump and filters in the engine room, I can tell you that there are several fittings that may fail, the consequence of which is a pressurized fine salt water spray! It may be better mounted in the outer locker through which you enter the engine room.

But, these are details. You have bought a fine boat (what was its name...I may know the boat) and have done a fine job. Good luck.

Re: 2001 Leopard 45 and what $64k in refit gets you

Thx for all your comments. To adress some of your questions:
- the rig quotes we've got were very similar. I wish I could pay less, but we wanted a reliable outfit doing the job and FKG was universally recommended and we didn't search any further. We ended up with FKG doing the diamonds as they required immediate attention, and then the plan was to come up to St Maarten the following season to finish up the rig. However, once we were on the hard at Peakes' in Trinidad we've heard a lot of good stuff about Jonas at Trinidad Rigging so we decided to finish the job there. Price wise it was pretty similar to what we would pay at FKG.
- with all the stuff that came from Poland, we had a very nice arrangement with one of the tall ships that sailed from Poland to Caribbean where they agreed to take our stuff across the ocean. All the heavy/bulky stuff came to the boat that way.
- all the "good deals" are there to have, just have to research and spend some time on the net. Most of our electronics came from Defender/Ebay, then got shipped to Poland by sea then went to Trinidad in our suitcases. Windlass came from Marinescene.co.uk when the UK pound was at it's lowest, chain from Yachtaman in Poland, life raft from Germany Boatoon.com, heads from svb24.com, second hand Parasailor from Norway.
I think the main point I am trying to make with this post is that if you do your research, take your time and find good deals then put a lot of elbow grease into your boat you can have a great seaworthy vessel for less than what some would make you believe.
Still, it won't be exactly cheap, but this a a whole other story...
As for the Spectra - yes, it sits in the outer locker in front of the engines, to be exact.
Sail safe!

Czesc LN, thanks for the details. Now I understand how you got the chain so cheap from across the ocean. Well done. Even in NZ it’s worth shopping from the UK for parts.

BTW, I’m originally from Poland. Nice fishy name .

Re: 2001 Leopard 45 and what $64k in refit gets you

It's long been common for EU boats French, Wauquiez to use brass thruhulls. They certainly lasted longer than 10 years. Maybe the ones sourced in SA were of inferior quality? Good quality bronze ones will last many decades if kept unbonded and we'll maintained

Re: 2001 Leopard 45 and what $64k in refit gets you

You say “ Interestingly enough, there was no sealant in between the chainplate and the backing plate! ”: I suspect this might be deliberate. If the backing plate has sealant behind it then you would not be able to detect a leak from the inside of the hull, and the system would then be subject to crevice corrosion.

5k for a Parasailor? Sounds like they are much cheaper in America than in Europe...
Congratulations, looks you made a really good deal!

Re: 2001 Leopard 45 and what $64k in refit gets you

Thanks for all of the detailed information. With 190K in refits. That leaves 90k for the boat? Am I correct?

When did you splash?

We are at Power Boats as we speak doing the same thing (Complete Refit) to a 2001 Leopard 42 we purchased here in last March.
