54Th Annual Miami to Key Largo Race

54th Annual Miami to Key Largo race

The 54th Miami to Key Largo Race is set for April 18th. This unique race starts at 8:00 AM just south of the Rickenbacker Causeway. The 120 plus boat fleet ranges from 14 foot skiffs to 50 plus foot keel boats. Roughly half the fleet are multi-hulls they range from Hobie 16’s to Large Cruising Cats. The race is unusual in that there is only one start with all the classes starting at once. This makes for quite a spectacle filling the bay with all manner of sails and boats. The course is simple, Start at 8:00 AM and sail directly to the entrance of Jewfish Creek in Key Largo about 45 miles depending on how you negotiate the channels across the shoals in the Bay.
The Race is run by the Miami Yacht Club with proceeds going to support youth sailing. The skippers meeting will be held April 16th and the Awards party will be on April 25th Registration forms and details can be found at miamiyachtclub.net
The race is very cruiser friendly and speaking for myself I find it less stressful than many other races. In the past the start has gone off at 8:00 AM GPS time and in the 15 years I’ve done the Race there has never been a General Recall so for sailors who are intimidated by start sequence flags it’s really a non issue here. So whether you’re an experienced racer or a total cruiser there is a class in the Regatta for you. The party at the finish area at Gilberts in Key Largo is always loads of fun and shouldn’t be missed. For photos from last years race go to southflasailing.com Hope to see you out there,
Capt. Michael Peteler
