808 miles in 24 hours, single handed!

Francois Gabart has just broken his own solo record. Congratulations to him!

Re: 808 miles in 24 hours, single handed!

Holy cow! Bloody French... just can't leave a perfectly good record alone, can they?

What an effort that must be, managing that huge boat at those speeds, day after day.

I wonder how he maintains good enough watch to avoid running into fishing boats, other yachts etc?

Jim

I'm not surprised because the guy's a sailing machine! When I was in Newport RI a few years back and spent some time with him between races, I got a sense this guy was like an Ironman when it comes to getting the best out of whatever boat he's sailing. I always tried to get the boat I was on trimmed out like his, but never got closer than 2 boats. Congrats Francois Gabart!

"Gabart is 503.22 nm ahead of the record pace after covering 836.1 in the past 24 hours." It's 28mi more than the title indicates.

I can't imagine the stamina to sail at that speed in those conditions and I REALLY can't imagine micro-dozing for sleep in those conditions. He may be a cyborg.

That record, exiting the south Atlantic, bodes well for him given how unpredictable the weather in that area can be. But he's going to need one good weather window after another to beat Coville's record.

Just looked at a tour and some specs of Macif. Pretty extraordinary sailing machine. Best of luck to him. I can't even comprehend the psychological fortitude it takes to be racing solo for 50 straight days.

We've come a long way from when a Valiant 40 set the solo circumnavigation record in1983. It took 199 days, lol.

I see this right ? architect is VLP, same guys that design lagoons.

And self proclaimed CF multi experts bash lagoons to death.

you, CF experts, should show more respect !

probably no one understands Multi forces more than VLP.

This is possibly true, but has no bearing whatsoever on the design of a production condomaran. Could it not be that the design brief given by Lagoon and that of those paying for a record breaking behemoth might be slightly different? And that the care and effort in construction of the two genres might be different?

Your argument is pretty flawed...

Ah Come on, the Chevy I drive is the same they race NASCAR with isn’t it?
Still, Geezus 800+ miles? That’s airplane territory, it’s hard to drive 800 miles in one day, and those are Statue miles.

I see the real problem not doing all that in one day, but what you are capable of the next day and the day after that as more important. The man has my respect.

Pity about the VLP / Lagoon relationship I got excited there for a minute and was expecting better things out of my Condomaran only to have my dreams shattered once again.

I have full admiration of VLP. Building fastest machines and applying this knowledge for most successful cat builder, balancing many factors with great success it is a major challenge. People that never would think of going to sea, now they go due to VLP and Lagoon and they are safe and they enjoy every moment.

Maybe, just maybe I can sense a bit of jealousy in CF architect space?

Re: 830+ miles in 24 hours, single handed!

Let's say he keeps posting 800+ miles per 24 hours to the end.
Will that kill interest in subsequent solo attempts?
