Re: Back in the drink,

Very jealous. Sealers Cove is where I got the cruising boat dream.

Mainly because I’d walked there from Mount Oberon, lugging my food and accomodation on my back, and so was digging into a meal of rehydrated crap before trying to get comfortable on 10 mm of foam “mattress”, while the cruising boats at anchor were BBQing steaks in red wine before retiring to their four posters for the night.

The bastards!

Did you add your boat name to the collection at, I think, Refuge Bay?

Re: Back in the drink,

No dinghy is bad. Put that on your short list to address.

My favourite bit of cruising is getting ashore and exploring places others can’t get to.

THEN coming back for a steak in red wine sauce and a comfortable bed.

Re: Back in the drink,

GiLow that reminds me of being anchored at Able Tasman at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. You would see all the plebs hiking along the beach, while fat old me is having a sausage and beer with a hot blonde on our yacht. Most strenuous thing I had probably done all week was raise the mainsail!
Cheers

Yeah, I fully intend to host the biggest m.f. BBQ ever seen at Sealers when I go thorough next, and invite all of the poor, starving and footsore walkers to tuck in.

But they’ll have to go back to their own beds... just saying.

I cant do every thing at once, My Hypalon dinghy fell to bits, The glue gave up the ghost, The pontoons are still pumped up,
A Company here wanted a Grand to glue it back together again,
I can buy a brand new one for less than a grand,
I bought a fibreglass dinghy, but it was too long at 3 metres to hang on the davits, And too heavy, I bought it with crocodiles on my mind for up north,
Plastic and crocs dont go together, hahahaha

Its a PITA without a dinghy, But Im too busy making sure every thing else works,
I do miss my dinghy to get ashore,
I made a bracket to carry the dinghy out board on the lower steps, Its also a back up if my diesel fails again,
I can use the outboard to get me out of the Poo, Just in case,

Im getting a Duck dinghy from Qld, $999-00 for 2.3 metre, They look pretty good,
Takes a 6 HP motor and 3 people, weighs 40 Kgs, Made from 3 layers of Goretex,
Aluminium bottom in it,

Also buying an 8 inch ONWA GPS, with all of Australia Maps included, It also takes a C Map Plus on a Micro card, So I can use any maps I can download to a micro card, Navionics, Open CPN, Etc Etc,
Its about $650-00 AUD delivered, Has an external Antenna, 10 metres of cable, Included,
The Internal antenna's have a problem receiving satellite transmission due to the roof and Boom above the GPS, Its hard to get the signal thru,

My Garmin GPS is old and outdated and I cant get Maps for it, The maps I can get are about $300-00 each and I still have a 4 or 5 inch GPS,

Installed my new secondary Bowspit today for my second anchor with anchor chain stoppers on both my bowspits,

Next is to reinstall my wind generator on the transom,

Next trip is a fishing trip to French Island, Tomorrow with the Girl,
I need a few days to relax,

Cheers, Brian,

Re: Back in the drink,

Have you looked at OpenCPN for navigation?

8” is pretty small for a plotter, and for the money you are looking at spending you could get a decent laptop with a 14” or bigger display and still have change.

I have downloaded openCPN into my laptop, 15 inch screen, Also Navionics,
Its too big to stick in my window, The laptop,
I just wanted some thing a bit bigger than my old Garmin, and I cant get new maps for the Garmin,

The 12 inch ONWA was huge, I couldnt see past it to steer the boat, as I look out thru the window, thru the boat for steering, Same for the 10 inch one, Its just too big,

I know mounting the plotter in the window is a popular place to put it, but I prefer the location mine is located at. I tried to find a photo of it , but only came up with this video of when we purchased the boat. The GPS is shown at about the 2:40 mark if you dont want to watch the whole thing.

Re: Back in the drink,

I just bought an 8 inch ONWA GPS with whole of Australia maps included, Built in, Comes with a separte Micro card that I can download my own maps into it as well, Open CPN, Navionics, Etc,
Sure beats the small Garmin I had,
$650-00 AUD delivered, From China,
It sits on a bracket above the fridge inside the boat out of the weather, Not that I get weather in there any way,
I can see past it thru the front windows to steer the boat clearly,
Plug and play, Even better, Just connect 12 volts to it, Has a remote antenna with 10 metres of cable,
Hanging out to see if their maps are as good as they claim then to be,
They sent me screen shots of Port Phillip Bay, and the RIP,
They do look pretty good, And detailed,

I bought a new 2.3 metre Dinghy, Goretex construction, Made in Queensland,
$1000-00 delivered, Takes up to a 5 HP outboard, 3 people, 3 piece Aluminium floor,
Big Duck Dinghys,
Should be here this week,
It will be good to get off the boat when I am parked in obscure places,

Couldn’t load the video here (Oz). Geoblock perhaps?

AU$650 is a good price, about half what their Australian web site was suggesting. Nice deal!

I hear you on dinghy prices, which is why I am nursing my 3.2 meter fibreglass floor inflatable as best I can.
