Three years ago I started a business and have been pretty successful (no employees and totally remote) and making around $1M per year now. Became debt free late last year, at which point I also moved to Florida on the gulf coast. Now I want to get into cruising on a catamaran to live part time on and work on - won't be retiring anytime soon (but I fully plan to keep my apartment and possessions etc).

Catamaran criteria:

- New instead of used. I'll knowingly eat the depreciation, but something with a solid resale value would be a plus.

- Can handle coastal cruising, bahamas, caribbean as well as crossing an ocean. Maybe a circumnavigation one day?

- Max long term crew would be two people (myself and a girl), but for shorter stints maybe up to 4-6 people like taking my parents and/or friends on short cruises for a week or two.

- Won't take 2+ years to build. Nobody knows what the future holds, so I don't want to wait. Death or marriage could be waiting around every corner!

- If $500k is doable then awesome (Excess 11 fully loaded with cruising equipment is ~$500k). Otherwise willing to spend close to $850k or so.

- Something fun to sail is a plus, since I'm also going to be doing a large amount of day sailing.

Ideally I'd like to get a Seawind 1370 or a Balance 442, but the balance wouldn't be scheduled for delivery until 2024 and the seawind not until 2027 (both claim they plan to increase production so those dates would move up, but who knows what may happen in this crazy world in the coming years).

So, now I'm looking for something that won't take 2+ years to build. I wasn't excited about getting a "production" boat, but seems like that's going to be the only option if I want something new.

From browsing around threads, seems like:

Excess 11 (soonest delivery slot early 2022)
Leopard 42 (delivery date unsure)
Lagoon 40 or 42 (delivery date unsure)

Can these boats safely handle ocean crossings? Do they have enough storage?

I've been browsing these forums including the recent Excess thread which quickly got off topic, and seems that every person has different reasons to hate on every different type of boat. I don't need a perfect boat, just a good one that meets my criteria.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Best new catamaran around 38-42 ft that doesn't take 2 years to build?

You could try to find a Seawind 1260. That model has been out since late 2018. However, you just don't see many 1160 and larger Seawinds on the market. Funny that the last used 1160 and 1190 that I know sold, were gone within weeks of owners notifying members on the Seawind owners Facebook that they were for sale. But a 1260 would fit your criteria, be a newer-design model, have to be relatively new as well since they've only been in production about three years.

Your pick of the 1370 is the longest lead time of the fleet. Partially due to the molds still being built.

I wonder if you could buy someone's place in line on a build that is already in production.

This is at the bottom end of the required size range and will be within budget. Building for late 2022 at the moment...

Dear Schmidla,

For me there is only one Catamaran I would consider: Outremer!!
The rest are floating caravans. Any Cat without daggerboards is a no no.
Good luck!!
Kindest Regards,

Re: Best new catamaran around 38-42 ft that doesn't take 2 years to build?

As you're probably finding out, not all boats of the same size have the same room or volume--and then there's all of the other factors.
To see the start of a table with competitive comparisons, take a look at:

Competitive Analysis.

On the features comparisons, use the values in place, or rate with your own results to customize your own priorities.
Included, There is a spread sheet page with volume comparisons as well. Interesting when you compare cost per foot, vs cost per sq. ft. of living space.
This is at least a start of getting some subjective comparisons.

Fountaine Pajot 40 (Isla 40, or used Lucia 40--check out the volume comparisons above) would seem to meet your requirements.

I bet there are even people who are looking to get out of it before the boat even completes - MAYBE even taking a loss, but of course they wouldn't tell you that

Re: Best new catamaran around 38-42 ft that doesn't take 2 years to build?

Consider contacting Dealer for your favorite choices and see what's possible--one idea that works, make a deposit on a boat not too far our, and include a "right of first refusal". Right now there are too many casually interested buyers, and dealers need some level of commitment to put you at head of the line.

Also larger dealers have more boats on order for possible changing circumstances--right now, for instance, at ACY you could put an order in with a right of first refusal, for a Isla 40 scheduled for 12 month delivery. Maybe get it sooner, but not so far out when all is said and done--Large successful dealers have earlier slots available than the MF next available slots.
Give it a try... eric@atlantic-cruising.com
Again, check out site comparing volume instead of length--this boat has equal or more living area than some 44's. VOLUME COMPARISON HERE.

12 out of the 15 Catamaran manufacturers in South Africa does not build under 50'.

Leopard etc. are one of the few that does.
