Re: Cat Capsize Lake Macquarie

Green Island? Which one? There was a cat that sank after hitting a sunfish but it was at Ulladulla on South Coast of NSW.

Here is a link to another thread that I started about that Seawind 1000 which hit the sunfish & the crew were rescued. I have attempted to find out more information or further pics since posting the pic of the salvage but no luck so far.

NSW Rescue Service published the piccy of it upside down, On their website,
Green Island off Ulladulla is where it hit the Sunfish,

I was 15 Nmiles to the North of it at the time, 3 hours away,
I was listening to the Mayday call on the VHF, When they stated they were sinking,
They were safely in their Dinghy when they got rescued,
Last I heard of it on the VHF was AMSA was doing the rescue,

One metre wave height and basically no wind, So bad weather wasnt a Factor,
I was motoring at the time, as there wasnt enough wind to put my Genoa up,
The other yacht I mentioned at Refuge Cove was also travelling south at the time and was two hours away from the sinking, Seawind 1000,

And yes, It did Overturn, One hull was almost totally under and the other hull was holding it on the surface,
It had broken something under the hull, Allowing the water to ingress,

Re: Cat Capsize Lake Macquarie

Mr B....the Seawind 1000 didn't overturn till well after the rescue after it had drifted well south to be off South Durras. At the time of rescue only the starboard hull was underwater after sustaining the catastrophic rudder damage from the sunfish collision.

I received a pic when the salvage took place to take it into Batemans Bay. This pic along with the initial Marine Rescue pics are on the other thread I posted a link to above.

Such a tragic event for new owners on their delivery trip home but it was fortunate that they all survived, the sea conditions were perfect with no wind & it was daylight.

Thanks for the update, I only had the Mayday call to go on, I was too far away to help, 3 hours north of it,

Cheers Brian,

Cheers Brian,
No worries...A sad day all round & no one would ever expect to be abandoning their newly purchased cat on its maiden voyage in perfect conditions.

Not too many sailors get to hear a mayday playing out, I bet that day will remain in your memory for sure.

Interesting. So did a hull fill and sink and pull the boat over? It sounds similar to a Switch 51 that hit a whale in the South Atlantic and capsized. I've been curious about the dynamic of a cat capsizing after hitting something with one hull. Seems counterintuitive.

Yes, basically it did after it was abandoned, then the initially flooded hull floated again once inverted.. To prevent further thread drift on this thread it would be best to go to the thread that I created about this incident where you will see pics taken during the rescue & then during the salvage when it was fully inverted.

Here is the link to the other thread to go to.....

Re: Cat Capsize Lake Macquarie

Just saw this thread for the first time. Being born and bred at Lake Macquarie (Wangi Wangi), it sparked an interest. After seeing it, I spoke with my father who still lives there and has a water front place that overlooks the area the cat went over. There is a shoal between sunken rock and Shingle Splitter Point (marked) that comes up to about 1.7m-1.8m at the shallowest. This area is apparently where it happen, hence the cat not inverting. To the north and west of this area is a shallower part of the lake. To the east is some of the deepest parts of the lake.
