Re: Catamaran Llama Lo - Two Missing After Yacht Capsizes Off South African Coast

It was reported that the catamaran had hit a whale which holed the hull and caused it to capsize. You can see the damage near the daggerboard casing. I wonder if the dagger boards hitting caused the hole in the hull. Glad they were safely rescued.

it looks to me this is not draggerboard casing but next to mini keels.

i think violent contact with mini keel caused the hole. Mini keels not sacrificial, is the issue. Red bottom does not help either. Maybe was direct attack of whale.

Hoezit Paul - No mention yet of what type of cat it was? I think that we all want to know that answer. Best regards.

The bottom is unique it does have daggerboard slots and no true LAR keels but some sort of little skeg before the sail drive . that skeg is what appears to be damaged . I would think a true whale attack would garner more damage. They may have just hit something.

Somebody mentioned it may be a Switch 51. Seems as if the mini skegs were designed as a structural part of the boat.

The part of the story where they saw ships in vincinity but were unable to get their attention with flashlight and flares reassures me that a DSC handheld with spare batteries is a better option.
Would also be interesting ot know why their epirb did not direct the rescuers to them. Maybe anold one without gps?

Regarding tethering something to an overturned cat... just tie off to a rudder.

I think they should have stayed tied to the upturned hull
