Catamaran with no mini keels our daggerboards?

Just saw a catamaran on yacht hub built by Choy/Csk catamarans in Hawaii that has been refitted in Philippines

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about them or how they sail , never seen a sailing cat that doesn't have mini keels or daggerboards . I'm guessing upwind is no chance or are those hulls deep enough to be workable

A photo would be a great help for those not familiar with Hawaian builders..
Are the hulls V shaped or U shaped..

V hulled, likely a modification on the Wharram Ariki with the ends sawn off.
Should sail as well if not better than Lagoons, FP's etc.. Nice looking boat.

Re: Catamaran with no mini keels our daggerboards?

We have similar shaped hulls.

Works ok, but a board does help upwind.

Ours is currently not working (well, fix it, hopefully next month).

So yes, adding a centerboard or daggerboard helps.
On a cruising boat, one board, in one of the hulls, is really enough. We have that configuration, and it's fine. We're not a raceboat, though.

Having no keels gets you in much more shallow anchorages, which is really a big plus.

All in all, most people are cruising for longer times, sail mostly downwind anyway, so the whole issue is really not that important.

Re: Catamaran with no mini keels our daggerboards?

They work, the hulls are assymetric with the flat side outboard and the curve in, unlike a Whatram V. Hobie 16 uses this too. The racy ones had daggerboards. These boats are often faster than the current chubsters marketed to cruisers.

The hulls on these boats predate the Wharram V. They were developed from Woody Brown's Manu Kai built in the late 1940s after research on Polynesian craft. CSK did it's first symmetrical V with the 36' Polynesian Concept built for actor Buddy Ebsen. It did have daggerboards.

Re: Catamaran with no mini keels our daggerboards?

Catamarans offshore is a great book by Rudy Choy. Choy used the very thin and deep hulls to make great cats. Woody Brown started it with Manu Kai and then thise spawned a whole generation of off the beach cats - big ones that would take tourists right off Hawaiian beaches, so daggerboards would have been a pain.

Choy and his partners developed a whole range of designs, with the same basic concept - long thin hulls, quite narrow overall beam, really good rigs, excellent engineering and great sailors who sailed hard in races. Aikane (overhead pic) was developed in the mid 50s and would beat most cruising cats today, even many racers would be hard pressed by her (if she was still around). Seasmoke was a record setter too, excellent offshore cat. (Pic of her under kite)

They cruised well too. World cat was the second cat to circumnavigate and there were others as well, even epoxy foam cats (Foamy). CSK were a brilliant design office that were producing excellent offshore cats whilst Piver was still swanning around San Fransisco bay, they don't really get the credit they deserve.
