Catana 50

Hey guys. Looking for an outremer 55, I came across few Catana 50, 2007-2008. On multihull dynamics, the data shows a very slow boat with very wide hulls. I am only interested in a cat that sails well in light winds. Is there any owners or other members whom sailed on a 50 to share their experience? Maybe the data on multihull dynamics is wrong? Thanks.

Re: Catana 50

If you are looking for an Outremer 55 then its unclear why you are investigating the Catana 50..?..

I hope that you understand that the two companies follow different design philosophies towards providing a "performance cruiser".. neither of which is right, or perfect..they are just different.

Given you are interested in the Outremer then i assume that you have already internalised the constraints a light displacement catamaran places on accommodations, storage and load capacity and accepted them.. and in return you will get a boat that will accelerate faster, respond to helm sweeter.

If otoh you are enthralled by the space on the Catana, the size of the cabins, the possibilities of enhanced storage, equipment and improved ride comfort of a higher displacement boat and can accept the compromises that this choice brings then go that route.

Catamaran selection, just like monohulls, is all about the compromises you are willing to make.. and these two brands take fundamentally different approaches.

both are excellent brands however and provided you decide based upon your actual needs (vs wants) I am sure you will be happy with either.

If you are looking at Catana 50 then look at St Francis 48/50, better boat around and no less performance than the Catana.

Re: Catana 50

Thanks for your replies, indeed Outremer is what I want but any boat is a compromise, I know I will compromise a bit if comfort on Outremer 55 and that is my preference. This Catana 50 would give me more comfort yes, my question is how much of a compromise is sailing ability compared to Outremer. Any users out there can tell me light wind performance? You also have to understand that when you buy used, there is not so many boats out there. Than, there is a question of where these boats are how they look, price etc.

Re: Catana 50

Catanas in general are not light boats but have big sail areas to perform in light airs. Within 4-8kn TWS I will sail at 0.7-0.9x TWS on my C47, depending on angle and sail plan.
Best regards
Thomas

That is v good and I would be happy with it. Again, from Multihulldinamics it looks like C50 is a different animal, with very low numbers for a Catana. Good to know about 47 as I have seen a few and like them. Thanks

Maybe they (multihulldinamics) did a mistake?

Re: Catana 50

The Catana 50 is a much, much bigger boat than an Outremer 55. With that size boat it is worth asking yourself if it's too much boat - both to maintain and to handle.

IMO the two boats are not at all comparable.

Note that the early Catana 50s are much bigger and heavier than the newer 47. Note that Catana redesigned the 50 around 2010-2011 and shaved multiple tons of weight off the boat.

Re: Catana 50

I have sailed a Catana 50.

It is an amazing boat, sails VERY well and is fast in normal to boisterous conditions.

If you want better performance in LIGHT winds, you want a Marsaudon:

Marsaudon Composites - Shipyard - Lorient - TS5

Outremer your second best choice.
