I'm not confusing them I just think if you want speed go for that which is fast.

And BTW, may fastest catamarans (with spinnakers) were Nacra's not Hobie Cats

I'm mid 60's so that was an important consideration.

You should not make things too easy on your body as you get older or you body will deteriorate faster than it should.

Then carry on and you shall have the better body!
I’ll stick with the motion that doesn’t rely on strong muscles to keep you in place!
To be honest, the downwind motion of a monohull doesn’t bother my muscles it takes its toll on my equilibrium.
As I said pick whatever suits you

And that’s what I’ve done, a performance catamaran!

May be.

I've been on boats etc since I was 6 years old and steering but there are always things to learn.

I'm sure you have tons more experience than a person like me that grew up 5 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and 6 miles from the Chesapeake Bay with many of my class mates being watermen ...crabbers, oyster men, fishermen

When my friends and I were in our teens we had to pick a good wave to follow to enter the narrow rough inlets on the seaside (Eastern Shore of Virginia) to get back in on our beat-up 14'-16' power boats and then pray our motors didn't quit

We'd ride in and thru the inlet on the wave

Re: Corsair Tri’s - Coastal Cruising and the odd crossing?

I’d take the Corsair 31 over a Bristol 27 in any condition, any seas. 30 knots downwind on a Corsair would be fun, and the motion would be much better than a mono. The tri would be going about the same speed as the waves, and the motion would be fine. Drop the main, have a little jib out, put it on autopilot, and get some sleep. Upwind in 30 knots isn’t fun on any boat, but I’d much rather be on the Corsair. It’s just a matter of reefing way down and keeping the speed down.

Yeah and you'd probably be on the news when the Coast Guard finally found what was left of you.

That's fine but it appears you weren't on the water yet and had to learn that later.

It always better to learn things at a young age which includes balance on a boat

Yes, you need balance when sailing a 27’ full keel sailboat downwind

I suppose it all depends on what your idea of comfort is like. If you don’t mind a little spray, lots of wind and action then it would be ok. If you don’t then a cat will be better or a mono.

Me personally am thinking that sailing hard during good weather and reefing sooner than later in foul weather and night may be just fine. And I won’t forget the sea anchor which seems to be the saving grace when caught in a storm.
I think one of the main fascinations people have with these boats is that they can be folded up and put on a trailer. I think of them more as really fun day sailors but aren't really set up for live aboard - plus they're expensive!!

Actually you don't. The Bristol 27 just lays in there nicely. I was talking 12'-20' boat weighing under 400lbs

Listen to the autopilot.......and enjoy the roll. Winds near 30 here just getting started which got me home quickly

Had I been in the ocean the ride would have been even smoother.
