The grounding to these tachs is the ground for all the functions - it wouldn't be working at all if the grounding was bad. It is possible that the internal ground in the ribbon cable is bad, but that leads us back to the original problem.

Our port one does this too, works about once every 4 or 5 days. Must be a Yanmar problem.

my VDO come and go, and there is a fix by cleaning the ribbon cables, I think it's linked in the thread.

Unfortunately the fix isn't permanent because the system isn't well sealed. Every time it rains my readout fails, I think it just gets wet. Once it's been dry for a couple days or the engines are run enough to warm and dry the contacts the readout comes back on. I have it on my list to try to solve the sealing issue and if I do I'll publish it but given that I have higher priority chores...
