Escape hatches

I’ve noticed that the escape hatches on cats are usually close to water line but just above, which seems smart because, I dunno, leaks. But, they seem somewhat like a missed opportunity for an underwater viewing window that I personally would find vastly interesting and possibly even instructive to checking props, anchors, etc. seems like it would be possible to make a decent sealing one that’s safe. Am I crazy? Just coffee dreaming, not proposing anything here. The idea of glass bottom boats has always be very appealing to me.

Re: Escape hatches

It worked for Cousteau on "Calypso!" Just gotta make it tough and assign someone to keep it clean I always thought it looked like a great idea, I'd love to have gotten a ride in the bow of Calypso!

Re: Escape hatches

If you are considering an opening hatch then I believe it would be crazy, a Lexan or thick plexiglass panel well installed checking with an established expert yard staff or naval architect could be wonderful. Lots of holes in modern boats and each one is important to keep tabs on.

Re: Escape hatches

Ours are about 2 inches above the water line. It's easy when under way to wait for a wave to pass thru, giving us a good view of the opposite keel and rudder.
If they stayed underwater then it would need bottom paint, or constant cleaning. Both would negate the benefits of having them as viewing ports.
Frankly, ours sweat, vs actually leaking, and are a bit of a pain! However it is pretty cool watching a shark or ray swim by when in the galley!!
