Good Catamaran Instructor?

I'm working my way towards living the dream by buying a boat and casting off and cruising around the world. First step of my plan was to learn how to sail, and I've done about 9 weeks of ASA + RYA Yachtmaster classes. I have found that I love sailing, but up until now it has been entirely on monohulls. These kinds of boats are perfectly fine, but I'd also like to see how the other half of the sailing world does things.

Does anyone know a good instructor/school to sail with for a week and learn the ins and outs of sailing a catamaran? I've had good/bad experiences with sailing schools - its essentially just a crapshoot whether you'll get a good instructor or not. I'm in Europe until August, then back in the States for a few months. Would love to get your suggestions for who to call / email and set something up. I'm not looking for a certification or anything, and I would prefer to have private one-on-one instruction. Whether it is a school or just someone you know that is an excellent teacher, please let me know.

If you are in the UK then try Topcat Sailing catamaran sailing schoolcatamaran training multihull tuition rya courses day skipper | Just another WordPress site . I haven't used them but I know they've been around for years and they are an RYA Training Centre.

Re: Good Catamaran Instructor?

Wherever you do the training, my advice would be to find an instructor who is not only certified to instruct on cats, but also sails them all the time. A professional catamaran crew would be an example. That way you get someone truly experienced with the pluses and minuses and who can tell you what really works and what doesn't. Otherwise, your instruction will just scratch the surface. Affordable Sailing School might be a good place to look.

Re: Good Catamaran Instructor?

If you are in the San Francisco area, I would recommend Stan Lander at the Modern Sailing School.

He was my Instructor Evaluator when I got my ASA 214 certification.

We offer this sort of instructional charter. We charter our Belize 43 cat out of the Bahamas.
