Green Egg BBQ on aft rail

Having burnt my self countless times on my stainless steel BBQ hanging off aft rail.Has anybody seen a design for a bracket to hang off a small green egg BBQ.I can see huge advantages in using one of these, insulated, enclosed burning so can heat up while on the move and probably safer altogether.I have see a design on internet for deck mounting but for smallercrat aft rail would be better.

At 68 lbs for the Green egg BBQ, your going to nee a very strong custom bracket.

Most Cruisers are using the Weber Q1200 grills.

Re: Green Egg BBQ on aft rail

It is heavy, but ought to be easy to do, I hang way upwards of 300 lbs on my davits and they of course attach to the rail but put most of the weight to the deck.
Certainly be unusual. If you have davits, then the rail close to the davit would hold it easy, I know as I can stand on mine with no ill effect and I weigh 250 lbs.

green egg is a extremely versatile tool but uses charcoal which could become a bigger issue. the others mentioned here are all gas.

Here's a mini. One bag of coal would last a long time in a dry sack

I sent the picture to a friend of mine to see if she would be interested in building some stands like that. I'll post it if she does.

She said that she would have no problem with that just needs some measurements if some one has them for a small egg that would be great I have the xl at home.

Re: Green Egg BBQ on aft rail

Very cool mount for the mini. I presume you store it below when not in use?

I'm an egg user at home and I have seen one mounted on a charter boat down in Florida (Size: Large). All the metal parts were pretty much rusted out.

Diligent coating of the metal with something like EEZOX might extend it's life, but I don't think it will hold up long.

Great question though. I think there are some egg clones that are insulated stainless rather than ceramic.

Re: Green Egg BBQ on aft rail

My rail mount propane barbecue is not on the aft rail but on the aft port quarter. Never had problems with burns or anything else and I use it most nights. Between davits, boarding ladder and life ring the stern is just too crowded.
The idea of a hot grill in the cockpit is one I find dangerous. Unless tied to a dock you can always meet a surprise wave resulting in burns or even fire..

I have nothing useful to add other than my son-in-law did a standing rib roast in his green egg last night and Man, that was GOOD!

Re: Green Egg BBQ on aft rail

I have a green egg (big one) and the outside still gets hot. So if the expectation is you can't burn yourself on it, I expect that to be not true. (anything that gets 600 degrees on the inside will be hot on the outside - ceramic or not).

Having it just side on the back rail is too risky for my blood!

I used to use a cast iron smoke box in my little propane Rail mounted cylinder BBQ. It worked OK. The small cylinders were a pain and often leaked after use making them a hazard also. You have to store them somewhere where the gas can drain overboard or pipr your propane from your 20 gal tanks.

My Green Egg at home can throw burning embers in high wind, and can have a backflash problems if not properly burped.

All of this stuff elevates risk a bit on a boat....but fresh grilled mahi is ....sublime
