Hello From an old guy living and retired in S.E.Asia

Well I had a rambling note written here but the internet crapped out, and I had asked for help because I was in the middle of a senior moment, and couldn't remember my login info. Long story short I am going back to the states and get a job. Then pay off bills and eventually move to Florida and build a 46 to 51 foot Wharram Catamaran. Once I accomplish that and learn how to competently sail her, (all my experience has been on power boats) I plan to sail back to the Philippines. I calculate that will take three to four months. But it's good to have a goal in life again. This plandemic hasn't been fun for me.

Traditional because my 31 meter Banka had no problem in 6 meter seas, and the Tarek (Amas) and Catig (Akas) were secured with 300# monofilament. Plus there were times my Catig (akas) and Tarek (amas) were 4 feet under water. I have experienced a flexible system and have faith in it. More over nothing broke (thank God for that). My boat "MBCA Hannah Glitz" survived Youlanda and was thrown 500 Meters and slammed down on rocks then the back wall of the storm put her back 450 meters almost where she started. I had the Marina engineer come inspect the boat and there were no leaks in the hull. The only damage was the Catic were ripped off and shot through the cabin like arrows. A couple years later my "New Captain" panicked in heavy weather and put her in the rocks. That episode broke the bank, I will be lucky to get salvage price out of her now. So I'm coming out of retirement and going back to America and get a job, pay off debts and build a wharram. I've always been on or owned power boats, what the heck I'm going to give sail a shot. After I get her built I will need to learn to sail competently. I plan to sail her back to the Philippines, that might take 3 to 4 months. I'm looking forward to the adventure, I'm 76 but in better shape than many 40 year old guys LOL.
If I'm lucky enough to find somebody sailing back to the states I would hire on cheap (board and keep), so I had a chance to learn how to handle a sailboat in open sea and or a storm. Thank you for listening.
Respectfully,
Braun.

BTW Boatman61, the Wharram will be between 46 yo 51 feet, It will take about 4,000 hour to complete (less if I have help). I guess the good Lord willing time will tell.

Once I get beck home and back to work I will build a Wharram, after I pay off bills. I hope to bring my Wife and five kids over there too. The girls can open a UT channel and cover the build and launch, then learning to sail her, plus the trip back to the Philippines. They are really beautiful kids so I think they will do well with the UT channel. Bottom line time will tell. Thank you for your interest in the Wharram.
Respectfully,
Braun.

The stich and glue technique is quicker and easier than the traditional frame and plank method, just stitch the envelope together and shove in the bulkheads to open it up.
Admittedly 46ft+ is a bit bigger than my 13ft and 21ft & 26ft Tiki's but same principle.. and lighter.
The 26 was a store bought GRP build.

Where in the Philippines do you currently call home? I have lived there on and off for many years and plan to return sooner than later.

We will be sailing our 47 ft. Cat but I anticipate it taking 2 to 3 years to get home since we plan on visiting a number of locations along the way. I look forward to following your progress.

Isn't there a boat builder on Bohol who builds Wharrams?

Re: Hello From an old guy living and retired in S.E.Asia

Have never owned or even sailed on a Wharram cat, but I did see some of a building technique that may be of interest. The workshop at Carnarvon, Western Australia, actually specialized in making large water tanks for farmers using large cylinders that were not corrugated. They made flat rectangular sections in fibre glass and rolled them up into cylinders at the farms. It meant they could load a large number of cylinder components onto a flatbed truck and assemble them on a circular or conical base and top sections at the farms. The savings were in the transport costs as all components were flat for transport. (This was in Western Aus. where properties are many hundreds of km apart.)

The boat building worked this way: using a very smooth flat floor (thin shiny particle board etc.) a complete hull side was drawn up. The usual release agent, gel coat etc. was applied followed up by polyester and glass to about 5mm thickness. Four of these full hull sized panels were made and attached to PVC rectangular section frames to create the two hulls. The “keel” consisted of a large diameter (200 mm?) PVC water pipe that was internal. The pipe needed to be flexible enough to manage the keel fore and aft curvature. You could test this in the hardware shop before purchase. I believe the hulls were inverted for this process as I did not see this part of the construction. The pipe keel and the frames were glassed onto the hull panels. More glass/resin may have been added internally and around the base as a rugged keel for beaching but I am sure a fiberglass specialist could advise.
The large diameter PVC pipes were utilized as a fresh water tanks. Cunning little trick I thought.
What I do recall is one owner describing how it took longer to make the two stern hung rudders than for the completion of the two hulls. The two cats I did see bobbing around off the beach did not (as I recall) have those peaky high bow sections. They may not have even been Wharram designs.
Sorry I have not got more details.
Any reason you have not considered building in the Phillipines?

First, although a mono-hull sailor, I have a lot of respect for the Wharram designs. Second, I think three or four months is very optimistic, especially with pandemic circumstances. However, good luck and welcome to the sailing life.
