Its an ingrained thing with many.. almost genetic..
What I would suggest is try it out, either charter or crew on a delivery..
I have hove to in Lagoons in 40+ kts and 5metre seas and downed sails and drifted before the wind 35+kts in short 3+metre Med seas where the slamming rattled my teeth trying to head into the wind for the Strait of Gib.
Hove to in tthe Atlantic was comfortable as was the drifting downwind making 1.5kts presenting our stern quarter to the sea.
Nothing much wrong with cats really.

Yeah. Just didn’t want to post a wall of text about plane chutes. Sorry for not being overly descriptive.

Re: How many cats have flipped ?

A number of Hobie’s and Prindles over a few years competitively. From there i raced a Corsair Tri competitively for 2 years in all conditions. In my part time i Skippered 2 different commercial excursion cats up to 50 feet in the Great Lakes and Caribbean. I did one down wind haul from STT to Miami on a Fountaine which was fun. Sailed a few others with friends in the keys and BVI’s over the years. Party cruises, day sails, and races. More than enough to make a judgement call. I’m probably forgetting a hand full.

What are the last 10 nonfiction books you’ve read?

So basically no true experience in a cruising catamaran, point taken.

Stay on topic, this is about 32oz steaks, and bad Chilean and (qualifier not needed) UK food.

When did this discussion suddenly start getting reasonable?

On a Bali 4.5 I reefed at 20kts because I felt she was overpressed, despite the owners protests.

Step back in amazement.. she maintained 12kts over the ground but slamming virtually disappeared with the lee hull no longer being driven down into the seas..

All I can presume is these so called guides are set in fairly smooth sheltered water close to land where wind speeds cannot build the seas one would get 10nm further out.

A Bali sailed at 12 knots? How much current??

Any cat sailors reef going DDW?
I have done it on occasion, but have pretty much given it up and no long use the main DDW. On a monohull you can usually get the boom close to 90 degrees to the mast which presents a lot of sail area to the wind. On my cat, at least, I can get nowhere near that and the main ends up being extremely over-sheeted. We now just fly the spinnaker DDW, or, in winds over say 20 knots, headsails only, either jib, genny or both.
