How many cats made in year?

Is there a manufacturers organization or database that keeps track of the number of cruising cats made each year? Just the manufacturers not the customs.

Here's a link to the USA market statistics. There were 63 multihulls 20 feet and over imported in 2010. It's hard to figure from the report how many cruising multihulls in total were sold, but there were only 449 sailboats of all types over 36 feet sold.

I did the same search you did prior to posting and got to the same page. Although interesting it was not quite what I was looking for. Also parts of the data are from the 90s. We tried. Thanx again.

I had a chat with the export manager of FP and the GM of Lagoon Turkey recently. Both didn't want to give exact figures, but my take aways are:
-overall Lagoon has been selling a bit more than FP, particularly after the succesful launch of 400, 450 and 560 last year.
-FP did a very good job with Mahe's and Lipari's, (otherwise the deficit with Lagoon would be much bigger)
-In number, both are close to 100-120 boats for 2010. However, in value, Lagoon is doing much better thanks to 560 and 620 which are selling much better than Eleuthra and Galathea. To cover up the gap, FP is preparing a new 57 ft to be presented in December 2011 in Paris. I saw the early designs, pretty much smaller version of Galathea, with semi flybridge at a competitive price. (less than a million €, ready to sail) Remember, Lagoon 620 is around 1,5 mio € and Galathea 1,85 Mio €.


Kettlewell, only 63 cats sold in the US seems unreal to me.. In Turkey, Lagoon alone has sold 29 catamarans, mostly 400 and 450 but also a few 560 and 620..And the market in Turkey is not comparable to US by any standard.

Those numbers come from The Sailing Company, not me, but their report and numbers seem to be the generally accepted stats by the sailing industry. These numbers were presented to the industry at a conference at the Miami show, so they seem to stand by them.

People are often amazed when they see the tiny size of the cruising boat industry in this country. That report indicates that the total number of new cruising sailboats 20 feet and over sold in 2010 was only 1163. I think during the boom boom times the total number is only around 3000 per year max. Remember, a really big manufacturer of cruising sailboats makes 100 per year. Lots of companies make less than 5 boats.

Careka, Gemini has made over 1000. Edited....Just checked their website. They've made close to 1100 as of December.

Some cats are bought by US owners, and put directly into charter service in the caribbean. Some of these cats are either brought back into the US by their owners, or sold at the end of their charter service and brought to the US by their new owners. These boats might not be counted in the above statistics because they are not new when brought into the US.

This may be off topic but cant find thread to ask. Im currently looking to purchase a used catamaran and have it down to two boats. Fountaine pajot lavezzi 40, and leopard 40. Both boats are 2006 and pre negotiated asking price is the same which boat would you choose and why?

If the leopard is a morelli & melvin designed one (i.e. it has good bridgedeck clearance) then all other things being equal - it would be that one for me.

The Gemini 105Mc is the latest revision. They have been making them for 27 years.
Just keep improving the same model every few years.
